Energy Speding monitor

Hello everyone,

I was thinking of an energy monitor,
how do they work,
what prices are they,
and are they any good in general?

Any tips for the UK market that I can use easily?
I am in rented accommodation and my electricity metre and fuse boxes are way up the wall for some odd reason.

Just be a little careful about paying too much for one seils, I know its some way of but it was announced this week that every household would have their meters replaced with meters that could do this. I didn't catch when the start date was but the whole country should be done by 2020...

But then again your country may also be independant by then whistle2

Putting devolution to one side (if possible, don't want to cause friction between nations here!) I'm keen to hear any recommendations too. Since Mr C and I moved from a small, well insulated, first floor flat that was only 17 years old to a 1928 three bed semi we're taking a huge interest in trying to make the place as energy efficient as possible. On the electrical front we're replacing lots of high energy spot lights that the previous owner put in and using energy saving bulbs all over the place is one thing, but I'm still concerned that the first proper set of bills is going to be somewhat higher than we hope.

Grateful for any views as I'm honestly not sure where to start! I will start a separate thread though on heat insulation...

tesco are selling 11watt cfl lamps that are designed for spotlights, then ones i got were es(screw in variety).

£2.50 each, got 4 and replaced 240watts of power to 44watts.

a big saving

with regards to power meters

there are the plug in type for 13amp plugs to see what power each appliance uses and a overall power meter, this has a sensor that clips over( no skills involved)the cable coming from the electricity meter. it sends a wireless signal to the base unit, nd this displays how much power (measured in watts) you are using.
some you can add the cost of 1 unit of electricity so it can calculate your power consumption in a monetary figure.

the high power appliances such as electric hobs,ovens tumble driers, etc you will see the power jump up when these are switched on.

I got that bit, my question is related to the distance between the electricity meter and the portable appliance.
I would like to keep the portable appliance in the flat (ahem), but it is some distance from the electricity meter.
Will it work? I am looking at info on the subject, haven't seen it yet.
Is it worth paying GBP 30.00+ for one of these? I am thinking that the washing machine and oven are amongst the worst offenders, but won't be able to easily reach their plugs (hence I am not interested in the little plug-in ones). do you know if there is a "second-hand" market for these?
