Poor Kids
Just downloaded this from UKnova, I knew it would be traumatic, but I was really unprepared.
Those kids are amazing, but so many old heads on young shoulders and their parents are amazing, but our society is disgusting. I have never been more ashamed of our systems that lets people live so far below the poverty line and then blames them for their lives.

Re: Poor Kids
Watched this the other day and it was indeed very sad. Hard to believe that kids are going hungry in this country.

Re: Poor Kids
Bother - I meant to watch it after having read the bit on the BBC website.
It does make me wonder how many children who I come into contact with at school come from situations of great need. Mr D remembers children he has taught in the past who didn't have access to items for personal hygiene - one boy smelt of mice. But even if you meet them at school, in the role we have there's not much you can do except to offer them some sort of normality and friendliness. The situation is desperate.

Re: Poor Kids
Call me naive, but I have to admit that I was shocked but just how bad the situations were for some of the kids. I knew things were bad in some parts of the country, but I had no idea it was that bad. My heart just went out to them.

Re: Poor Kids
I don't want to get political, but I want Cameron, Clegg and Osborne to meet these kids face to face and explain to them why its important for the country that they have to suffer so much.
It didn't help that after we watched Poor Kids, we saw something that had on those smirking shiny faced c-words. The juxtaposition of the two programmes nauseated me. When I think of the good that the proposed Robin Hood Tax could do, bettering the lives of kids like that, it just makes me fume that there are people who argue against it.

Re: Poor Kids
The production company for Poor Kids have been overwhelmed by offers to help the children and families in this programme, offers of cash and clothing and help.
I feel so very much relieved that in our increasingly hard and cruel world, there are people who are moved to acts of generosity.v
If you also want to contribute [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] is a link to the webpage of True Vision film makers.

Poor Kids - wanting to help
We've been contacted by many people wanting to help the families in the film. There are many specialised charities in the UK working to tackle the issues causes by Child poverty and who can offer help and support to families in similar circumstances to those shown in the film. Details of a range of organisations can be found on the BBC Poor Kids website and Save the Children has set up a specific fund here for families in similar situations. But if you really want to specifically help the families in the film, then email [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] who can give you details.
We are working with Save the Children to assess any offers of help to ensure that they are
- appropriate
- in the best interests of the families and children
- to ensure the families are helped but not overwhelmed
If you wish you can send a cheque made out to The True Vision Foundation, with a note on who they would like money to go to, to
The True Vision Foundation
49a Oxford Road South
London W4 3DD
Or you can send financial support using a credit card via Paypal to the recipient address [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] but once again, please make clear who you would like the money to go to.
Finally, if you want send money electronically the Foundation Account details are:-
Natwest
Acct Name: True Vision Foundation
Acct no: 22637907
Sort code: 60-05-30
If you want to enclose or email a letter that's fine, we will of course pass that on, but for data and child protection reasons we cannot pass on addresses or promise that the kids will respond.
If people want to send gifts then please send them to the same address, with cheque to cover onward postage made out to True Vision Foundation.

Re: Poor Kids
Badger - thank you for all the information. So glad to hear that those kids featured are receiving such kind gifts and that hopefully the film has opened people's eyes to what is going on in our own towns and cities.
