Poor Kids

Just downloaded this from UKnova, I knew it would be traumatic, but I was really unprepared.

Those kids are amazing, but so many old heads on young shoulders and their parents are amazing, but our society is disgusting. I have never been more ashamed of our systems that lets people live so far below the poverty line and then blames them for their lives.

I haven't seen this yet but read the bit in the Radio Times and felt VERY SAD

Watched this the other day and it was indeed very sad. Hard to believe that kids are going hungry in this country.

Bother - I meant to watch it after having read the bit on the BBC website.
It does make me wonder how many children who I come into contact with at school come from situations of great need. Mr D remembers children he has taught in the past who didn't have access to items for personal hygiene - one boy smelt of mice. But even if you meet them at school, in the role we have there's not much you can do except to offer them some sort of normality and friendliness. The situation is desperate.

Call me naive, but I have to admit that I was shocked but just how bad the situations were for some of the kids. I knew things were bad in some parts of the country, but I had no idea it was that bad. My heart just went out to them.

I don't want to get political, but I want Cameron, Clegg and Osborne to meet these kids face to face and explain to them why its important for the country that they have to suffer so much.

It didn't help that after we watched Poor Kids, we saw something that had on those smirking shiny faced c-words. The juxtaposition of the two programmes nauseated me. When I think of the good that the proposed Robin Hood Tax could do, bettering the lives of kids like that, it just makes me fume that there are people who argue against it.

There are many specialised charities in the UK working to tackle the issues causes by Child poverty and who can offer help and support to families in similar circumstances to those shown in the film. Details of a range of organisations can be found on the BBC Poor Kids website and Save the Children has set up a specific fund here for families in similar situations.
