Eating and preserving the meat, making stock from the carcasses, tanning the pelts.

I suppose there isn't actually that much meat on a wild bun, to be fair...will you make a hunters hat from the skins?

About a kilo and a half to 2 kilos on a decent sized rabbit. Which is quite adequate. I am gradually working up to making a Ojibwe fur blanket.

Gosh you have big bunnies down there!

The ones I have got round here are a fair bit smaller than that from a meat pov...apart from one which I think must have been a X breed as it was HUGE..... Shocked

That's not an enormous amount of meat. By comparison a farmed/home bred meat breed rabbit will weigh in at 4-5 kg.

The trick is not to shoot the littlies, and not to shoot them early in the year.In early spring they have depleted the weight they put on for winter. In late autumn they will be at their heaviest.

If you contrast the above phot with the one from the bunnies shot a month ago, you can see that these are already visibly heavier:

I think it is probably because ours were shot just because they were
eating our crops...in the spring...so were obviously hungry, already...and therefore
probably a bit underweight...
