Wax moths! Empty Re: Wax moths!

Googling wax moths quickly found me information, even Florida specific information (how serious a pest appears to be climate related).

But it appears even in Florida a healthy colony should be able to fight off wax moths so perhaps they are just a symptom of something else weakening your bees.

Me bees do be goooooone!

By examining the comb we THINK that something happened to the old queen. We found one queen cell hatched and another one capped but not open. ALL the honey was gone and there was no brood barring a few capped cells with almost or just emerging new bees.

So it looks like new queen hatched, mated and then buggered off with the rest of the hive.

Sucks!

But we still have another hive and a package on order.

Due to teh season change that hive was quite shaded but we dont know if that contributed to the hives failure.

So the learning curve goes up and up but on the plus side, we got about 10 pounds of honey out of that hive and still have the drawn comb to melt down and the packed pollen to give to the new package of bees when it gets here.

Hmmmm interesting.

My friend is bringing me a bee hive in a few weeks. There's lots of things not fruiting due to the bees in the area dying/leaving.

The council has been air spraying the breeding grounds for mosquitoes which is good and horrible at the same time.

Are they spraying at night? If so your friends bees should be OK. But the mosquitoe people should also be looking at putting fish into the breeding grounds as well. MUCH better long term control.
