National Mills weekend
A quick reminder if it is needed that the coming weekend, 12-12 May, is National Mills Weekend 2012
Many windmills (wind permitting !) and watermills (should be enough of that ) will be turning across the UK, whether you want to enjoy the sight of a bygone era, or buy some great bread flour, there are plenty to visit (see link for details).

Re: National Mills weekend
And what a nice day for it. We took a picnic to Stevington windmill, a 18th century post mill, which looked very fine indeed with the sailcloths on, and there was plenty of wind for it to turn .
I did my little bit by sitting on the brake lever whilst the sailcloths were put on ...

SInce Freebird mentioned Mills weekend in the tearoom, I thought a photo or two might be in order:
Me, applying some weight to the brake lever of Stevington postmill.
Date for the diary: National Mills Weekend 2013 will take place on Saturday 11th and Sunday 12th May 2013.

A reminder for those of you not going to the Bodger's ball and at a loose end, this year's National mills weekend is on the 11/12 May. Grab yourself some low carbon flour !

Re: National Mills weekend
Something to look forward to: National Mills weekend 2015 will be held on the 9 and 10 May. Hopefully a mill near you will be turning, if not grinding flour.
Once again it looks like this clashes with the Bodgers Ball, but probably for the last time, as there are moves afoot to move the ball to June in the hope that we can avoid spending the weekend damp and trying to stop the tent blowing away !

There is a fantastic water mill just a few miles from us but sadly no longer working or open to the public. It was in full, restored working condition & grinding flour up until about 20 years ago but was sold by the owners & has not been heard of since. Such a shame, I always used to go there to buy really excellent flour & I always hope that ir will reopen one day.

I have always liked windmills particularly. I think it is probably because of growing up with Camberwick Green ! I really enjoyed watching them all again with my son when he was younger. I love the way it was OK in those days to have a main character (Windy) get drunk and fall asleep on the job.

Bump ! Next weekend ...
I shalll be at the Bodger's ball up in Sherwood Forest, so will probably not make it to a mill this year. I'll try to take some pictures !

Re: National Mills weekend
Unfortunately not for us this year either. I've just checked the website and although there are half a dozen in Cumbria, none are even remotely close to where we are staying. Shame.
