Soil Temperature... Empty Soil Temperature...

Post by Sparhawk 6th April 2013, 2:19 am

At some stage in the recent past I managed to purchase a wine thermometer in a nice wooden box for about £1, the thermometer itself is 4 & 3/4 inch long and is absolutely perfect for pushing into the soil to get a reasonably accurate temperature.

I thought I would use it this way as most people can tell whether wine is served at a good enough temp by taste...

Back to the point, under conservatory roof offcut protection, on the south coast of the U.K. at the thermometer depth of 4 3/4" the soil temp is still only 3 deg C...

Brrr...

Soil Temperature... Empty Re: Soil Temperature...

Round here, the old way of telling if the soil was ready for planting potatoes was for the old boys to whip their trousers down and sit with their bare bottoms on the soil. If they could comfortably sit on the soil, then it was OK to put the potatoes in (no inuendo intended...)
