Chain saw bench

I'm not sure bench is quite the right word, but didn't know what else to call it. Ever since we installed our log burner, we've had large lumps of wood that need cutting up. The first wooden bench the man made suffered and finally fell apart. He's more of a metal worker than wood worker, so he welded this up from an old exhibition frame that was taking up space in the garage. It's adjustable to the thickness of the log being cut (the white vertical has a screw adjuster on it), and I reckon it's brilliant.

I've got such admiration for people who can work in wood and metal - what a brilliant bit of kit!!

Interesting idea - I've never seen one like that before. Is it his original design, or inspired by something ? I take it that you start sawing off chunks from the outbound end ?

I am more of a hand tools kind of person - mostly because chainsaws still frighten me a bit Neutral

Yes it is his own idea and design - inspired, he said, by cantilevers (not that he'd ever seem them used for this purpose). And yes, he starts cutting from the protruding end. I was watching him using it today. A comfortable height to work without bending, and because the log isn't actually wedged into place, the inner piece just falls away on the last cut. The weight of the log means it just holds itself in place.

I like that the uprights are mostly in tension or compression, no great bending forces. And that you don't need to keep repositioning the log for each cut.

I'm struggling to picture the scale, is it made from 4" box section, or smaller ? And I wonder if a portable version that folds flat for storage would work, or be too wobbly.

No, smaller than 4" - haven't actually measured it but more like 2" or 2.5".

An interesting design - not too over engineered. If Mr P made something like that you'd need a crane to lift it! How do you split your logs for the wood burner? You'll have to get the man working on a log splitter next. We've got a tractor mounted hydraulic one & it can split 500ml length logs for out boiler.

He's already thinking about it! At the moment we split by hand, so the tree trunks need to be cut reasonably small to stand on end for splitting.
