Homemade presents

Did anyone receive any homemade presents at Christmas? I know it was a few weeks ago, but I've just got round to taking a picture of the egg cup which Mr D bought ofr me. OK, it wasn't home made in our actually house (!), but it's a lovely piece of carving. I like the way in which the side is organically curved: presumably the make split the wood along the grain. It was made by a craftsman, John Phillip, just over the border into Wales at Caerleon. I think it's made from elm (that's what it looks like to me.) Homemade presents Egg_cu10

That's an unusual take on the eggcup ! It is so hard to identify wood from pictures on the computer; the colour balance can be hard to judge, but it could be elm.

I made quite a few presents, but I don't think I got any homemade ones back.

I did get a handmade item, but professionally made for me.

It is a stamp, for making my mark on the various wooden items I make, but is particularly traditional for wooden bodied woodworking planes. I met up with chap who makes them, Ian from Chalco stamp and die Ltd, at a woodworkers' gathering before christmas, and he had it with him as a work in progress. He explained to me how it was made - hand engraved lettering, then the background nibbled away with a lot of skill and patience (he was far too modest to say that though !)

Serving boards and natural edges are all the rage at the moment. Trendy restaurants pay prices I could only dream of. Personally I think there is a lot to be said for a plate; the food stays on better Very Happy

. Still, a nice board is better than having your meal served to you on a roofing slate, which I have had too !

There are some pretty good care instructions on his site. A minimal rinse off and wipe over is the best. Don't leave sitting in water. And Don't put anything wooden you love in a dishwasher ! In fact, don't put anything at all precious in one. They ruin glasses and the glaze of ceramics over time.

So far I've only got one eggy dribble on the egg cup (I suppose it's really more of an 'egg stand'...) and wiped it off straight away. It came with a leaflet (probably with the same information from the website) about how to care for it - it was very exact about the temperature of the water which was interesting. Obviously a man who knows his material.

Oh CH, I too prefer to eat my food off a plate rather than objects obtained from a builders' merchant. It can lead to some very silly dinner table conversation though trying to come up with the most outlandish food/receptacle combination.
I must say those jigsaw puzzle boards are pretty classy.

I had to giggle at the advert from Amazon offering to sell me a 'personalised cheese board'! Normally I delete those kind of adverts without looking at them, but I had to see what a personalised cheese board was. It was quite horrid - a piece of slate (which would have been lovely as a piece of natural material...) with bad lettering saying 'Dad - you're the big cheese'. Shudder...
