Christmas hamper

The lack of practical skills in the teaching of our young people is so often lamented. But seeming not so at C-H Jnr's school ! He has chosen to do a cookery option, and at the end of last week came home with a "hamper" (well, decorated cardboard box) filled with:

A christmas cake
Ginger bicuits
Chocolate orange creams
Chocolate fudge
Lemon curd
Red onion marmalade

All made himself in class. And looking and tasting great so far. Quite proud of him really !

I'm impressed, CH. I do remember making mince pies in cookery at school - the pastry was a disaster. My mum always used to pack the ingredients needed, already pre-weighed. For some reason, on this occasion, she didn't weigh the flour and just sent a bag. Not knowing any different, I used the lot!

That sounds very impressive Chilli Head and good for the children to be producing something relevant and worthwhile.
My main memory from school cookery was the vegetable soup. We were told to take a Kilner jar to put it in but there must have been about half a gallon and I had to go home on the bus with my satchel filled with jam jars of soup.
My friend went on to do cookery for O level & did a Christmas cake. When it was iced it was a tight fit in the tin that she had been using to transport it. Her father had to cut the tin off with tin snips before they could eat it.

That reminds me of some of my daughter's stories from doing cookery at school, especially the boy who had to transport a casserole home in a two litre Coke bottle!
But top marks to CH Jnr for his hamper, and well done to his teacher for a great idea.
