Hello from Compost John from York
Hi folks, I was invited to join this as I am a very keen advocate of green living and have many years experience of living a low carbon lifestyle.
I work as an entertainer 'Professor Fiddlesticks' and travel by public transport or bike + trailer, and do festivals, fetes, schools and mainly kids parties. Fun, provides a small ethical income.
My passion is composting... I do a lot of it, and am responsible for initiating York Rotters, a Master Composter scheme.
I collect materials from a greengrocers and have over 30 compost systems in my garden. I'm happy to answer ANY composting queries (and do so on facebook on Organic Gardening 101's discussion 'Any Composting Questions answered here', well worth a read!)
I heat the house with two smokefree logstoves (Clearview) and use these to heat water and dry fruit.
I'm keen on measuring my carbon footprint and like what's on offer at http://www.thecarbonaccount.com/
My ActOnCO2 footprint works out as about a twelfth of the UK average and my Carbon Account stats are there for anybody to see.
I do a lot of voluntary work, currently involved with York in Transition, but also started York Green Festival and North Yorkshire Credit Union, and I did a lot of work within Local Agenda 21 after qualifying as an Environmental Health Officer in the mid 1990s.
I'm trying to be a better gardener but the composting always comes first. I am good at growing edible mushrooms and I'm a good cook, and enjoy finding wild food which includes 15 species of fungi.
My ADHD/Aspergers means I'm all over the place, over enthusiastic, very passionate and driven, take things literally, good at making connections between things (great for sustainability subjects) but don't always behave entirely appropriately!
Looking forward to contributing stuff here.
I write a daily diary at http://lowcarbonlifestyle.blogspot.com/
Yours, John
(and, btw, my life is far from simple, but in some ways it is simpler than full-blown ratrace capitalist nightmare living..)
