February garden action !
I started digging up the Hugelkultur bed yesterday.
Pear wood, considered too rotten to burn, a bit more crumbly but still recognisable.
Conifer root balls, still pretty much undecayed.
Ash log, about 2' long. Ash, which if left outdoors rots as you look at it ! Almost unchanged.
I guess this is why we have preserved Viking ships from ship burials. Wood does not rot at all quickly if buried. What a useless growing system ! I will leave the remaining wood on the surface in a pile in the no-man's land beyond the plot, where beetles and fungi can enjoy it.
I also cut down the raspberry canes, and mulched them with manure. Turned the compost bin, it is looking like good stuff. Came back and split and stacked a car boot full of oak logs.
Ache a bit this morning.

Do you think Hugelkultur hasn't been tried and tested enough? Maybe it looked good on paper...

Nice to know I'm not the only one who failed then. And I can compost with the best of them but this theory failed me.

Re: February garden action !
Well, I made use of the best bit of today to go to the lotty - not too ravaged by the storms. I spread more manure, and dug out the couch grass encroaching on the blackcurrants. Not looking too bad on the whole.
I still have the remains of my kale - we had a lot off it already, but left enough for it to continue growing maybe ? And some PSB which seems to be sitting there doing nothing much - sown in April last year, planted out, I have healthy looking plants but no spears as yet - when are they supposed to perform ? Might they still produce in early spring ? I never quite know what I'm doing with brassica.

Re: February garden action !
There's no action in my garden yet though I have put broad beans, carrot seeds and potatoes in the tunnel. My garden is currently partially buried under 2 large larch trees one courtesy of storm Eunice and the other storm Franklin. They haven't done any damage apart from flattening a load of snowdrops.

What a relief that your house is OK, and that you are too.
