Mastercrafts - Thatching
Wonderful programme, really enjoyable!
And so difficult to do...I have only had a go at bracken thatching a shelter, many moons ago...am in awe of being to the standard the tree got to, after only 6 weeks....

Re: Mastercrafts - Thatching
After watching it I dreamt about thatching last night! I enjoyed it (really good camera work for one thing) but realised that there's no short cut to years of practice and experience, so I ended up feeling a bit frustrated for the people involved. It made me think of Tony Robinson on Time Team saying (every week) '....and we've only got three days to do it'

Re: Mastercrafts - Thatching
That used to drive me bonkers about TT, but I just settle into the fact that it ISN'T a dig in the accepted sense, ( although yes I know they do all the stuff properly...) but a small window on things..
One small point, is it me, or is there a trend emerging with the 1 woman, 2 men,....and was I imagining things, or did MD keep saying she was having difficulty with stuff when, patently, she wasn't?
I thought she was better than the other 2, tbh....she looked much more comfortable with the straw and also listened to what she was beingtold...then did it.
Must re watch it , anyway!
has the snow gone with you, yet? We still have lots hee....

Re: Mastercrafts - Thatching
I hope the next programme isn't one woman and two men again - if it is, it will be mysteriously predictable (until it gets on to the masterclass in dried flower arranging, then it might just be one man to two women!!)

I must admit I found "her" the most frustrating in the programme, to me she wasn't there to learn she was there to do...
Although I did find it difficult to watch a 1 hour programme about trying to teach people to do something that has a full apprenticeship...

Re: Mastercrafts - Thatching
I've been at my mother's house today - she was in the Land Army in the war (in Wiltshire) and remembers being taught to thatch hay ricks. The thatch had to have the same function as on a roof (i.e. keeping rain out), but she remembers having to wet the thatch first before putting it on. She doesn't know why though.
