HML Film Club

Seen a good film recently? I have, Canadian TV is typically US imports or badly made CanCon, and being rural and not very sociable types, our social activity is mostly movie weekends, a film on Friday and Saturday nights. Lets share our recommendations to watch and avoid.

I will start with last nights film Men Who Stare at Goats. A good line up, George Clooney, Ewan McGregor, Kevin Spacey and Jeff Bridges. A good story - the US armys experimental New Earth Army, the Psi corps. I won't go into the story to much, except to say that it was deliciously weird and subversive ans spoke volumes about the military drone mindset.

I give it a and a worth a view if you fancy a giggle ...

Any film you have seen and loved or hated

I just got "Julie and Julia" - about one of my great heroines Julia Child and the young woman who decided to cook all 524 recipes from JC's legendary 'Mastering the Art of French Cooking' in a year.
I was quite prepared not to like it - lots of JC disciples have slated the very idea of it, and Meryl Streep cast as Julia alarmed me, but she was very good indeed and it is a super film. Up there on my shelf of foodie films with Tampopo and Eat Drink Man Woman, Jamon Jamon etc.

And La grande bouffe, of course.

I highly recommend "Ink" as well

It as never picked up for distribution, so the makers put it on the torrents feeds and encourage people to download it for free. More fool the distributors, it is a beautiful film.

I must admit a fondness for "Chocolat" as both a book and a film..

also "Gone in 60 secs" but thats probably a non PC film to like.....

The film I could watch again and again ( and have done) is " The Red Shoes"

and also "A fist full of dollars" and any of the other films in the Clint Eastwood cannon....

love them all...could watch them over and over again...

Hmm what else...there are so many!

"Heat" and also "The Usual Suspects" are excellent IMO

and "LA Confidential". "Chinatown" and "The Two Jakes" if you like Dashiell Hammett style ameriacn crime thrillers....

And of course anything with Humphrey Bogart in..especially "To have and have not" or "Casablanca"

"Some like it Hot" ...or "Its a wonderful life" or any Marilyn Monroe film...

Ah...wonderful films...

Quite often CM and I, with tme to watch something, later on at night , will go for something we have watched many many times before, like one of these, rather than something we have recorded, new.......

OOOO and yes, any Peter Greenaway film ( The draughtmans contract, The cook etc, or a zed and two noughts etc ...)

Trying to think of a favourite, but an impossible task I do love the old Sci Fi films though.

I haven't watched it in a while but I managed to pick up one of my best favourite films ever on DVD in a charity shop for 50p yesterday ...

The Last Emperor ...

I can feel a long darkened evening, with a couple of glasses of something nice coming my way soon...

MrD and I watched a brilliant film last weekend - Micmacs. It's French, with subtitles, and is funny but also a bit surreal. The story is about a man who for personal reasons sets out to destroy two big weapons manufacturers, with the aid of the community of misfits to which he belongs.

We've just watched a German film (with subtitles!) called 'The Lives of Others', about the interrogation which existed in Communist East Germany at the hands of the Stasi. It was recommended by a work colleague and isn't the kind of film either of us would normally go for, but it was excellent and worth watching. I think we were both concerned that there would be graphic scenes of torture, but actually it was all psychological. It made us realise how bleak and grey East Germany must have been to live in, and what a frightening environment where you could never say what you really thought for fear of being overheard.

I'm going to have a Charlie Sheen weekend.

And maybe watch some of his films as well.

Last night we watched Hereafter with the french subs - twas stimulating and saddening..

Tonight its Tron Legacy

Brideshead Revisitied AND Eps 1 and 2 of Spaced. AND Eps 1,2 of Black Books and Father Ted.

Having an alternative comedy fest.

Got a copy of "Sherlock" today ( Ok, a series rather than a film, but hey, I don't care...... )

We now have watched the 3 episodes for the 5th time; still find it all excellent and v
amusing. Rather supect you need to have read all the books to "get" all
the allusions but still very excellent.

And Benedict Cumberbach and Martin Freeman are really excellent in their respective roles

I bought a big book with all of the stories in a few years ago, & read them back to back, excellent but I think I will take it a bit slower next time, but I thought the series was very cleverly written & the throwbacks to the original stories superb...

I ought to have mentioned both Cm and I have read all the stories many, many times so had great fun spotting all the allusions to them in Sherlock

We watched 'The Eagle' last night, with Jamie Bell and Channing Tatum, a story about a Roman centurion in Britain who wants to find out what happened to the legion his father had commanded years before. This legion had apparently disappeared without trace while defending northern Britain against the war-like tribes in Scotland.
Mr D and I had completely different reactions to the film because 'The Eagle of the Ninth' by Rosemary Sutcliffe (on which it's supposedly based) has been one of his favourite books since childhood, and he was incensed by the liberties they had taken with the story. He also felt that none of the characters were developed as the film went on. I loved the film because I've never read the book. We both thought the filming was brilliant (filmed on location in Scotland and Hungary) and very atmospheric. My nephew who is staying didn't want to watch it because he says Channing Tatum is too much like an American football star!!

I remember listening to I think it was Eagle of the Ninth or may have been the Lost Legion on Childrens Hour in the 1950s great stuff

I just had a nice suprise, watched I Am Legend a remake of Omega Man. Am always scepitcal about remakes, but I thought this was really good & not specialed too much with modern day effects.
