I'm all for recycling & try to do a bit more every so often, but when does it go too far & are the "authorities" in danger of turning people away from these ideas by trying to introduce impractical measures?

Or is it just the "newspapers" trying to put people off?

Just read the story and to be honest, it sounds pretty close to what we do over here.
We have:
a slop pail of kitchen waste
A green bin for garden waste - (though we compost everything here, so that just gets used for leaf composting).
blue bags for newspaper, tetapak, cardboard packaging waste
Blue bags, for cans, plastic and glass
Clear bags for all the rest (though you can hide stuff in white bags in the clear bag for privacy)

All of which is picked up fortnightly

Putting aside the sheer number of plastic bags we have to use (horrible) it focuses the mind and we actually consume so few items that produce recylcable or waste products, that we have little to put out - in fact we can go weeks without accumulating enough to put out for collection.

The issue with the Hate Mails obsession with recycling is that they have this sense of inertia and nostalgia about being able to throw stuff away willy nilly and anything else is pandering to "NuLiabore" or "Council Nazis" or "Green Zealots".

I do often wonder when they will just stop pretending and come out and Back the BNP...

Thanks gents for your replies, but I wasn't aiming at the party political on this one as the way I figure it is that somewhere, if not today it may be tomorrow, but it is going to happen near you, how careful before "green fatigue" sets in...

The far right press started the "green fatique", they portray us as fascists determined to make oodles of cash out forcing the ordinary folk into doing things they don't want to and are not British/American/Canadian (insert artificial national identity).

It was ok when we were pot smoking hippies, harmless and something to laugh at. When we became political and started trying to improve the world by advocating less consumption and less waste, then we became a threat.

As an older member of society, I think that a lot of the even older people are scared, pure & simple. What if they get it wrong, what if it goes in the wrong bin (there is talk of fines), can they carry the bins/bags. I have an OH who is just cannot remember what goes where,

At the moment our picks ups have just been changed, we have to leave them curbside, what happens if there is an accident, what if the rubbish is scattered (it seems we have to pick it up from the pavement etc) At one time I sepperated out cans etc, only to be told you don`t need to do that. Garden rubbish they only take if you buy there green bags at £1-50 a bag.

A lot of trouble is lack of clear communication. Lets face it even during WW2 when it was compulsary not to waste anything, people still did.

You also need to be willing to spend time sorting for recycling. We once had neighbours who simply couldn't be bothered, and thought I was mad to recycle (in the days when it wasn't compulsory) We had wheelie bins for landfill rubbish, and were not allowed to fill them so that the lid din't shut. Our bin was ususally half full, while our neighbours had more rubbish than they could deal with - it wasn't unusual to see a member of their family (usually one of the children) who had been sent out under the cover of darkness to put their excess rubbish in out bin!! I'd like to know how this particular family would cope with nine different recycling receptacles!
