OOO hard one...I have always been a
I WANT to vote Green BUT IF I
vote Lib Dem they might get in to our area...so am torn between
tactical voting and what I actually support....
which I suspect is what an awful lot of people will feel like... [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Re: HML Election Poll
I do not vote in the UK anymore, but if I did it would be Labour for me.
Tis more than a party it is an ideology, the party has lost its way and needs to find itself again and decent people don't abandon their friends when they are in trouble.

Re: HML Election Poll
Hmm yes I read you on FB saying that..but tbh I feel so let down that if they were a friend I WOULD probably be saying "enough is enough" to them...and looking to distance myself from their antics..
I have had enough of them tbh...although I am not sure what else I could vote for, in all conscience....
I feel really sad that the Labour Party, which I have been a supporter of since childhood (I stood as a Labour candidate at my Grammar school in the mock elections in 1974...!)
is so far removed from what I thought it stood for...

Re: HML Election Poll
Oh, don't get me wrong, I am appalled at the current state of the party, the erosion of civil liberties, the pandering to global capitalism, the Iraq war do not represent the party I believe in, but I think it can be redeemed.
I suspect that this election will be the last FPTP one, Clegg will jump in bed with Cameron and will get PR as his bride price.
A term in opposition will do the party good, time to reassess values and time for the country to be ground under the heel of Cameron and his mates, time to remember what the Tories are really like.

Re: HML Election Poll
Hmm.
But the last time the Party had a length of time in opposition to "remember what the Tories are really like" we ended up... in 1997...with them getting in and doing "the erosion of civil liberties, the pandering to global capitalism, the
Iraq war" etc over the next 13 years!
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
IMO I really do not think they will learn from their mistakes, sadly.....
which is why I am not going to vote Labour on Thurs. WILL NOT vote Tory ( once was enough, to my enduring shame....)
but will not vote Labour, either...

Re: HML Election Poll
But isn't that part of the problem, & I don't just mean for the U.K. elections...
IMO it is worse elsewhere...
If people listened & voted for what was best for them as individuals as opposed to how they have always/traditionally voted/been expected to vote & for once in their lives were selfish & voted on what was proposed as opposed to historyonics perhaps there may be more change, or more realistic campaining, but it would possibly make our representitives more likely to keep to their promises...
I would like to add I don't know how "Lady S" will vote, has voted in the 20+ years that we have been married & I don't care, & she is the same, the one thing we do know is that we have always voted & always will...
As far as I know she may have spoilt her paper, & as far as she knows I may have spoilt mine, we may have even cancelled each others votes, but it was our choice at the time...

Re: HML Election Poll
I wonder if there was ever a time when we voted a Party into government because we liked what they had to say more than the others, rather than because we hated the incumbents...
I have to say that I have always voted Labour, though I did leave the party after my opposition to the Iraq war was dismissed as popularism and not based in reality. Mind you in the leadership election after John Smith died, I actually voted for someone other than Blair to take the reins. I never really liked him and hated him after he dropped clause4.
The problem with being a Bennite style socialist is that there is never really anyone to vote for

Re: HML Election Poll
Yep!
I would vote green if I thought they had a hope in heck of actually getting in, but as they won't.....
Must admit Labour have done a heck of a lot of very good stuff in the last 13 years esp the adult education stuff, civil partnerships, Equality Bill etc etc ..
I left the Party after they reaged on fees for Uni eduaction and also the Birmingham Northern relief road.
am sort of reconsidering my position now...!

Re: HML Election Poll
I do try to remind people that the Tories would probably have done exactly the same as Labour in response to Americas wars and the infringement of civil liberties in the name of National Security.
Its a difficult one, the civil liberties has been a major thorn for me, as I have always championed Labour because of their championing of the individual and collective liberties of the people - but their allowing the police to treat dissent and protest as being near criminal activities shows me a Government that needs to find its roots and stop being scared of the people it governs. It needs to find a balance between security and freedom that doesn't compromise either.
That's why I think it needs a period out of office to get rid of the center right Blairite tenancies and the the Brownite economic obsessions. If Labour can find its feet again and starts looking with fresh eyes at its Ethical and radical roots, I am sure that it can move away from the New Labour project and be relevant and electable.

Re: HML Election Poll
The Labour Party is definately not what it was. What got me is the ease at which the noses went into the trough as soon as they got into a prolonged stretch of power. The expenses scandle has shown that up but the invasion of Iraq was the worst and totally unforgivable.
If we had Germany style PR we could vote for the local MP and off the list so it would mean you could use your 2nd vote for the green or other smaller party...

Re: HML Election Poll
I am now disenfranchised and so can no longer vote in the UK. Mind you, I always felt a bit of a fraud being able to vote when I lived there, because I always felt a guest there even after I got British nationality. The only time I voted FOR somebody was for Tony Blair, and that was more for the Labour Party than for him (I never trusted him, always thought he looked furtive and unmemorable, not a good sign).
I now see that in the UK just like in France, it is more a matter of voting to keep someone(s) out than because of positively wanting someone IN. And for the first time, if I still voted in the UK, I would vote for Nick Clegg (never thought it would come to that, voting Lib Dem!).
Here in France, it is also a matter of having to vote to try to keep someone(s) out, whether in the presidential or the local elections. Very tedious to say the least, and quite gloomy too.

Hi Spoopka, nice to see you back
I am actually quite in favour of PR, but I do like to point out it may not be the panacea that we hope fore, that future coalitions may not just be Lib/Lab Lib/Con, but Con/BNP/UKIP/UU as well

Although that would at least achieve the stated intention of those parties to tackle overpopulation - not so much from the clampdown they would enforce of immigration, as the exodus of non Daily-Heil readers. I for one would be on the first flight out, and if the volcano prevented flight, a slow boat.
Re: HML Election Poll
We have long wanted to move to Canada actually. We score well on the points system - G von R being a very qualified nurse and me being a French-speaking sustainable construction consultant. Only problem is that if we sold our house we would have about enough for the airfare from the proceeds, and perhaps a coffee at the airport.
Re: HML Election Poll
I gather you have already had your French experience(s) Wilhelm. If you hadn't, I would specifically NOT recommend that you move to France - unless you are a retiree with a good British pension, France is not very kind to young entrepreneurs with a family to support. The only advantage I can see with France is that if you pick your area right, you should still be able to get quite a bit of land around whatever ruin you decide on. But France is far from being the Eldorado depicted in programmes like "A Place in the Sun"...
Canada sounds good. Michael Moore makes it sound VERY good.

You should get looking on the NS Job sites, we have a serious shortfall of medical practitioners here, someone we know is an Oncology nurse, when she came for interview they damned near begged her to take the post and stay on straight away. She now drives into town to work and hubs stays at home running the farm - they have a tiny mortgage as well because rural property is dirt cheap here..

Your kids are the right age too Billy. Don't leave it until they start building up to "qualifications"

Maybe so, but they need to redeem themselves before you should vote for them.Badger wrote:Oh, don't get me wrong, I am appalled at the current state of the party, the erosion of civil liberties, the pandering to global capitalism, the Iraq war do not represent the party I believe in, but I think it can be redeemed.
Voting for them now is like rewarding the dog for biting someone.
I think that if the next government do not take some serious steps towards sorting themselves out, then I think it is time we had the revolution. Do it legally and democratically: hold a referendum to depose the Government.
The problem does come that we would have to find something to replace it with.

Re: HML Election Poll
I don't vote in the UK anymore HL, I don't beleive that ex-patriots have any moral right to vote when they do not live in or contribute to the motherland.
So I have disenfranchised myself, but I can still support my political home, one day radical socialism will find its place again in the Labour Party - the neo Conservatism of Blair and Brown has failed the party and will be washed away during its time in opposition.
