BARGAIN BINS
In the veggie shop today I bought 2 bags of large soft local vine tomatoes for 35p each. Result several pots of tomato puree which actually tastes of tomato.

Re: BARGAIN BINS
Speaking of fresh peas we got two big bags yesterday from the bargain bin. They've been shucked and blanched for the freezer and the pods are in the bucket to make some nice white wine. Lovely!
Re: BARGAIN BINS
the pods can also be boiled up to make a lovely delicate stock for pea and salmon/prawn risotto. I often sautee a handful of peas in butter and a splash of white wine and mash them and run them through the risotto to give it a delightful greenish tinge (sounds iffy but looks lovely, esp al fresco)
Re: BARGAIN BINS
Ooohhh, that sounds lovely: I may have to grow some peas next year

Re: BARGAIN BINS
We had this very meal day before yesterday. Some home-cured salmon with juniper chucked on top at the end. It was very nice.
Re: BARGAIN BINS
I like using my peas for pea, broad bean and mint risotto. I too use the stock from the pods but often to make soup or for the next batch of risotto.
Sadly I chossed up my veg patch this year when FIL was ill and died so the grand total of produce has been 1 broad bean pod and about 10 pea pods. Hardly enough for a family of 4. Better luck next year.

Re: BARGAIN BINS
We are fortunate to have a cheap fruit and veg place down near town, and when stuff is needing using VERY fast (or even past it!) they will put it out for £1 a tray. Today I got a tray of red and yellow peppers (about 20 in all), 2 trays of apricots (11llbs total weight) and a tray of small peaches (7lbs total weight). I have spent all afternoon processing them and have a lot less room in the freezer now!
Re: BARGAIN BINS
£ nice ham bones today. Enough for a salad, sandwiches & whatever else I can think of, bonus time some really thick stock for soup.

Re: BARGAIN BINS
Not exactly bargain bin, but certainly SALE time.
OH was in our Pound Stretcher yesterday & they had some single burner portable gas cookers. All in a nice carry box. £9.99 reduced from £11.99. Gas cans for £4.99 for 4.
Now we have no BBQ or open fires it will do me for the emergancy that will surely come at some time.

Bag of OTT toms 25p, cooked, blitzes & in the freezer.
Big pack of lamb bones £1.37, enough to make 2 stews with enough meat on them, to be meaty as well. 1 stew already cooking for tomorrow, will add dumplings in the morning. Yum

Re: BARGAIN BINS
For some reason I decided to have root about in the local flea-pit second hand shop today.
Found a brand new campingaz party grill minus the box but in all important respects complete. It looked like rather a useful bit of kit for emergency backup situations on account of the large stable cooking area so I though it was worth risking the purchase. Cost me £3.00.
I just looked it up online to check if everything was there and discovered that it's between £35 and £60 retail.
Result!

Re: BARGAIN BINS
special at abel & cole for chicken wings - still pricier than I'd get at the local market (I can get 3 bags of the things for £2) but means I'm sorted for making buffalo wings and stock for quite some time now.
Went to the past-date grocer this week and grabbed two punnets of huge pears for £2 which child is eating his way through happily, loads of oranges for juicing for £1, carrots for same and also apples (trying to give my immune system a boost). I'll have to visit there more often but I can only get there if a mate of mine drives me.
