Has anyone got any clever tricks for picking currants?
Black currants are not so bad: you can give the bunch a bit of a tickle and most of the ripe ones will fall into your hand, but my redcurrants are too squishy to do that: best I could do was pick them by the bunch, but a lot of them are not hanging in handy bunches. :?

Blackcurrants - easy way to prune and pick is to cut just below the lowest bunch, take the branch away to a comfy chair and a table with a nice glass of something on it and THEN pick the currants.

Redcurrants - sorry no better ideas that what you are doing, althoigh IMT they are always on the little bunches so pick those..

Do they want to be pruned at this time of year?
And doesn't that method waste the ones that aren't ripe yet?

Ah, this is for when the currants are all ready pretty well at once. My bushes, I pick the top, ripe ones but then the rest come ripe all together?

So no, don't do it if you would lose out, obviously!

but for the last ones, it makes sense to pick and prune at the same time...

and yes, after fruiting is the right time, or so I have always been led to believe. its what I do, anyway and I get more every year?

I always try to propagate (some of) my prunings, but I would not have thought now is a good time for that. :?

I just snip the whole bunch then destalk them with a fork.

Part of my problem this year is that there are so many currants that they've flattened the plants... and I haven't kept the weeds down as well as I might've. Embarassed
