What are you reading now?

I enjoyed Dan Brown, especially Angels and Demons, which was a real page-turner for me. I loved the symbolism bit, as I did something similar for my dissertation, decoding the equine iconography of the Pictish symbol stones in Scotland.

You can keep the Sci-Fi though - not my genre. Hyperion was also a racehorse foaled in 1930 incidentally, little chestnut chappy, VERY fast and very Araby looking in his later years . . .

I definitely have to get my mittens on Hyperion, I think. Maybe the library can help me out there if I don't find it second hand anywhere.

Just finished reading Doors Open by Ian Rankin - his first book since retiring Rebus. Full review on my blog. I enjoyed it, but something was missing, although I'm not sure if it's a Rebus sized hole or not...

Basic story - Edinburgh millionaire art fan ends up in a group planning to steal major works of art from the National Gallery. He also gets the local criminal mastermind involved - never a good idea.

Worth a read though - just glad I didn't go out and buy it new.

I have the Hyperion and Endymion omnibuses, a breathtaking ride, absolutely love the span of time and the narrative (the political and social commentary is pretty much of my liking as well)...

Oh Badger, I definitely need to be initiated into both Hyperion and Endymion I think. It sounds good with the social comments...
Should really get that Ilium finished soon now, so much to read, so little time!

At the moment I am reading Asimov Caves of Steel. Cut my teeth to adult reading on this author with the Foundation series. Then I have borrowed Clive Cusslers Vixen 03.
Still dipping into the Readers Digest book though really useful.

Just finished re reading books 12- 8 of the "True Blood" series of Sookie Stackhouse novels...very good and well written!

Any books which make me re read a series 3 times on the trop since Christmas has to be a cracker.

Even I would not do that, every 6 months maybe, but the stash keeps getting bigger & takes longer to read. lol
I have the same problem with the audio books as well.

BUT have to be upbeat, keep on trying to engage rather than scare people etc etc ...

Just started Nella Last`s War. What a cracking book, I am going to be so sad when I finish it.

I just read The Gargoyle by Andrew Davidson which I thought was really good.

Am a third of the way through 'Mr Pip' by Lloyd Jones, which I bought months ago, but this is the first time I've felt like picking it up and reading it. It's brilliant!

I've just finished the complete Sherlock Holmes series. I started it years ago then put it down for a while....restarted and finished now. Gets a bit weak towards the end.
As a side track... A.C. Doyle was a doctor himself. Doyle spent a summer before he was fully qualified as a locum doctor in the Shropshire village of Ruyton XI Towns. He hoped that the money he would earn would help to look after his widowed mother. The local doctor on his return had other ideas, he refused to pay Doyle say that if he did Doyle would be liable for any mistakes he made during the summer. To save him from this the doctor would take the risk upon himself (and save a packet!). In revenge Doyle turned this country doctor into none other than the bumbling Dr Watson. One way to live for eternity is to be paradied!

Just started Nella Last`s Peace enjoying tremendously.

I've had my eye on a particular book in one of the local charity shops for a rew weeks & I managed to get Lady S to by it on Saturday as it was a bit expensive (hardback £3)...

Last Man Down, The Fireman's Story, by Richard 'Pitch' Picciotto...

Have only got part the way through, but, IMO what a good read, there doesn't appear to be any politics, just an account of what happened by one of the bravest...

Reading THE CARRADYNE TOUCH by Anne Mcaffrey First time reading a non SciFi by her. Enjoying it very much. It is about Ireland & horses.

Hmm don't know how I missed post before Wood Troll, I did the complete Sherlock Holmes stories a couple of years ago, I'm very glad I did it, I ploughed through in one go, I will probably read the stories again but with a short break between each...

I also found another book called the Great Tales of Conan Doyle loads of stories he wrote that weren't Sherlock related, another good read, a bit strange/weird in places...

The secret heresy of Hieronymous Bosch.

Combines two of my favourite things: Bosch and Catharism. Not entirely convnced by the hypothesis yet, but a riveting good read nonetheless.

Also just read JellyB's Hawkwind book, which was fun if a little repetitive in the Dave Brock vs everyone & revolving door lineup stakes after the first 300 pages, and, unable to sleep last night, I whizzed through (appropriately enough) I am Ozzy by Ozzy Osbourne, which was surprisingly lucid although very few anecdotes I hadn't read before.

Currently wavering between Ian M Banks "The Algebraist" and Gardners "Middle Egyptian Grammar" fun company I ain't..

I'd go with Banksy. His sci-fi is almost always good fun, even if the mainstream stuff has been a bot hit and miss for the last few years.

Oh, I am a major Culture fan and usually revisit those novels every couple of years, this is my third reading of The Algebraist, but I should really be reading the Middle Egyptian Grammar, as I've been having trouble cracking the Enclictic particles..
