Re: What have you done in the garden today?
Yes it is, it is a tiny patch, which took me a week to clear & at the moment it looks as if I am growing cat poo. I was waiting for the rain to wet it all down (done) before I planted a load of bulbs. Just have to decide how to discourage the cats now.

I've resorted to netting held down with netting pegs - I sowed green manure on one of the raised beds, and the only way to prevent it becoming filled with cat manure was to net it. I used black net so it doesn't show, and when the plants are big enough to discourage cats I'll remove it.

Not a bad idea, but every time I try & cover with anything, they just go on top, be it twigs or whatever.. Might have to resort to Jeyes fluid. At least that way it will disinfect it as well.

Still no chance of doing much. The rain is certainly persistant, & when it is not, I have to go out or do something else. Thik we need a non smiley with an umbrella, makes more sense this year than a sunny one.

Re: What have you done in the garden today?
A glorious day here, and at last dry enough to work in the garden all day. My cubic yard compost bin that was full last year is now only quarter full with some quite nice compost. So I'm riddling that (bit of a makeshift job using an old mesh incinerator over the wheelbarrow), putting the finer stuff in a sack to use in my pots next year. The coarser material going straight onto the asparagus plot at the mo, as a mulch.
Would like to finish the job today - stamina and strength not a problem, but already my finger joints are protesting (fledgling arthritis), so trying to vary the work or I am going to suffer horribly for the next week.

Re: What have you done in the garden today?
Well further to the last post, I did finish the job. When I started, I had hoped I might get a couple of buckets full of sieved compost, with the rest too coarse to use except as mulch, or not composted enough. In the event, I finished with four good bags of compost (each an old New Horizons bag). That should be enough to use in my greenhouse pots next year. Also managed to turn the fresh stuff into the bin I've just emptied.
And also, pulled up some of the leeks grown from seed from the seed swap.

Re: What have you done in the garden today?
I dug out a compost heap on Sunday. Had to take a break in the middle to go Tandem riding with C-H jnr, then finished it off when I got back. The collapsed in a heap.
Today I've sown some broad beans (scar side down, remember ...) and picked the last few raspberries.

Re: What have you done in the garden today?
I went down to the greenhouse to check on the propagators today, and on my way back I spied a most welcome sign of spring ... emerging Asparagus ! Just poking a tip up here and there now, but I'll dig out some bell cloches to protect them from the frost and hasten them on a bit.

Re: What have you done in the garden today?
Today, rather slowly using a trowel and my good hand, I planted a grape vine Madeleine Angevine, in the hope of one day having something to make wine together with the Scheurebe I planted a year or two ago. It seemed like too nice an afternoon to stay indoors.

....and when you drink the wine, you'll be able to reminisce about how you planted the vine one handed!

Re: What have you done in the garden today?
Did some clearing up & planted some shallots & lettuce seed. Used an Arctic King lettuce as I hope it will ignore the weather. Pots in the greenhouse to start off.
Also put some sprouting seeds to soak & some mung beans for a chinese meals.

I put my sweet pea plants and cauli plants outside to begin to harden off. Problem is, the weather forecast reckons we're in for some wintery weather again next week, so I'll have to put them back in the warm for a bit.

Mended the greenhouse where the glass was broken in the winter storms, and found enough bits to mend the coldframe too - that gets broken because the foxes jump over the fence and land on it. And then planted some onion sets in modules in the greenhouse.

Re: What have you done in the garden today?
Am just about to go outside and have a go at mixing my own seed compost. Two years worth of leaves have made less than a bucket full of leaf mould now they're all rotted down, so will mix with homemade compost and sharp sand. Will be interesting to see the results.

I was in my shed (wearing a t. shirt, two fleeces and a coat!) so it wasn't too bad - the sun came out as well. Surely spring has to start soon, though....

Re: What have you done in the garden today?
I went to the allotment today, and did a bit of weeding. Normally I would have planted potatoes a fortnigtht ago, but it still seems hardly worth it given the temperature. Some of my hardwood raspberry cuttings seems to be springing into life though, so perhaps there is light at the end of the tunnel ...

Re: What have you done in the garden today?
I put the early potatoes in the garden veg plot today. It is much more freely draining than the allotment, so easy to work on - I just dug holes with a long handled trowel and dropped them in. Hope the weather warms up for them !
