What have you done in the garden today? Empty What have you done in the garden today?

Post by Compostwoman 17th November 2009, 10:11 am

Well...seeing as I have just dragged a "hello" thread waaaay off topic  Embarassed  I thought I had better make a place to talk about what we are all getting up to in the veg plot at the moment.

So...in the last few days Compostman has taken down the beanpoles....they are from our hazel coppice so will now be cut up for firewood. There are overwintering leeks, parsnips and carrots in the plot...but apart from that not much else as all the brassicas were massacred by the squirrels AGAIN  Evil or Very Mad  and the perpetual spinach was a bit of a disaster this year...

I need to gather up more leaves to make leaf mould...so if it stays dry will be getting out the mower to do that today....

And need to clear out the big pots in the polytunnel...there are 45 holey buckets in there, waiting to have the growing medium tipped onto the veg plot and then I need to scrub them out, ready to be re- filled in the spring for next years tomato plants...

Oh and start sorting thro the seeds, to plant in Jan ( eek!)

I have to re sow salad seeds in the pt ( thanks to the blardy hens  Twisted Evil ) and harvest various stuff growing in there..also sow more winter polytunnel stuff...I have some kale in there and some carrots..and the last few sweet peppers waiting to be picked...

So I had better get on with it!

What is everyone else up to today?

Hopefully, debudding the fuchsia cuttings, digging up chilli plants for pruning and repotting and hunting in the garage for the 'lectric prop to start some onion seed off....well that's the plan........ Smile mice and women etc.

What have you done in the garden today? Empty picked broccoli

Post by Penny 18th November 2009, 12:29 am

By the time I got out there the temperature was almost down to freezing -- which mades my hands a little numb. We were stacking firewood most of the day.

My grandson was out to help with the firewood so he kindly went into the garden and did some of the raking.

Gathered up many mower loads of leaves, it dried just enough so the sit on mower was picking them up

Dug out 3 bins worth of compost from 5 separate bins, filled 3 bins, now have 2 empty...so can start tthem off again with new stuff

Transferred finished leaf mould from last year into an another 2 empty wooden compost bins..and started filling the 3 empty leaf mould bins with the leaves I gathered up

Picked the last of the peppers from the polytunnel

Did a bit of tidying up in there as well.

A good day!

Absolutely nothing. Zilch. Zip. Nada..etc etc ...it poured with rain, the wind blew hard, it was vile and horrible ...even in the shelter of the Polytunnel...my hands began to go stiff with cold and painful ( I suffer from mild Raynaulds syndrome...) so I gave up and went inside....

I would play, but I have not been in the garden, only to check the washing for days. Too much rain & cat poo at the moment & do not feel well enough to clear it up Rolling Eyes

Went into greenhouse & potted some Buddleia cuttings that I had soaking, managed to get 7 from the 4 bits that I, um, trimmed from a bush that I know of somewhere What have you done in the garden today? 32... (I'm only doing it for the bee's & butterflies...)...

Rescued one of my planter covers that had aspirations of becoming airbourne, decided that was too difficult (not enough runway), & then tried to be a submarine in the pond...

This evening a large shelf decided it was going to commit ritual suicide & leap off of the wall of the workshop at me (unless Lady Sparhawk has a new button on the t.v. remote What have you done in the garden today? 5) so I had to revamp the top shelves a bit sooner than I had planned...

Thanks, Lady S won't be getting the insurance money quite yet lol! it also missed the large glass of drink that was sat underneath all the debris too...

Of course it could have been the workshop monster, closely related to the shed monster, does any one else have one?

You know the one that goes in & throws everything arround after you've been in there & also manages to hide the very thing that you are going in to look for just before you want it ...

Well I did do the fuchsia debudding Very Happy but I didn't do the chilli plants or find the prop in the garage, (our daughter had me viewing flats so she can move out 'cos she's a big girl now Sad ).

Instead I did the leek seed heads that had been drying under the radiator in the lounge - they just don't like to play ball in the greenhouse this time of year and a few candytuft seeds.............are they awkward or what! Rolling Eyes

Actually, nothing yet Very Happy but yesterday I picked a quart of broccoli florets!! Our broccoli is the most generous of the various veggies we plant and here I am picking sizable amounts at the end of November!!

Of course, this year isn't as cold as it usually gets here. I suppose it's global warming.

Isn't it fortunate I love fresh broccoli?

Also gave the salad leaves a water. grow

Greenhouse has salad leaves, carrots, garlic, peas & a couple of mystery pots.

Hoping to get in the polytunnel later - digging and adding manure. As for anything in the garden itself that depends if the weather cheers up a bit. Bloomin' cold at the moment.

And really I MUST get on doing the gite webpage ...... in the nice warm house .... with a cuppa to hand ... Very Happy

Raked up leaves which were threatening to smother daffs.

Surveyed the area in the wood where the new hen pen is going ( think big avery!)

PLANTED some spuds in pots inside the PT!

and some more salads..the first lot from this years planting are poking through now..

also filled trays with loo roll tubes, then filled tubes with growing medium, ready to plant Broad beans and parsnip seeds into in the next few days...

Discovere the hens have destroyed the raised bed where I had planted the garlic ( grrr)

so planted some more...it MAY be OK, if we have another cold snap...

Pol, it is a good idea

I actually did do that as Garlic bulbs need a period of cold to trigger their development..so yes I stuck them in the fridge for a few days before I planted them

I've made a little fence round the rhubarb, which is just beginning to show signs of leaf buds. Hopefully I have therefore protected the rhubarb from the chickens, and protected the chickens from the rhubarb!!

Emptied 3 very large planters, (2 wheelbarrows full each), replanted rhubarb in fresh compost, transplanted overwintering carrots, broadbeans, & onions, staked "bendy" cabbages, planted 4x chitted spuds in car tyre tower...

Dismantled 2 very larged planters (used to be pallets in a previous life)...

Cleared area for new raised bed put corner stakes in & stringed between them, got approval from site manager
(Lady Sparhawk) to carry on with plans  ...

Now got those nice aches that you get when you're pleased with what you have done when you've done a lot,
I think a wee drop of something a little later on...

Remember to clear off the snow!

It can rip the plastic and bend the frame from the weight!
