Energy/breakfast bars
I'm after a few suggestions here folks... I'm starting to increase my riding distances, and I'm going to need to start munching on someting as I go along, otherwise I'll pass out! I've tried the flapjack type things, but find that they make things worse. According to some seasoned riders sugar is to be avoided as you get an initial rush, but then a huge drop off afterwards. I've looked at the commercially available stuff, but they don't seem to have any real ingredients, just "E" this and "E" that. So, any suggestions?

Home made dehydrated banana chips?
Not those rock-hard, revolting things you get in health shops, home made ones. Packed with potassium & fruit sugar rather then processed sugar IYSWIM. They stay kinda pleasantly chewy & I thought dehydrated because they're easier to carry than a whole fresh banana which is frankly, gross and unappealing if you accidentally squish it during transit. You can also do apple slices too and they're equally good.

For cold weather ride, put a pat of butter in the cocoa before the ride. The extra fat will burn slow to keep the heat and energy up (great tip for camping too!). Think Oak log fire, not paper strips.

Re: Energy/breakfast bars
How does this recipe sound for a 'muesli' type bar? I have halved the sugar in this and it's fine, you could almost leave it out all together.
Boost Bars
250g jar apple sauce (unsweetened if you prefer)
1 cup dried fruit, chopped
1/4 cup raw sugar
1/3 cup sunflower seeds
1/4 cup pumpkin seeds
2 tablespoons sesame seeds
1 cup rolled oats
2/3 cup wholemeal self raising flour
2/3 c coconut
2 large eggs, lightly beaten.
Prehats oven to 180C.
Grease a swiss roll tin, line with baking paper.
Combine sauce, fruit, sugar and seeds.
Stir through oats, flour and coconut.
Gently mix in eggs.
Spread into pan and bake 25 minutes.
Cool in pan an cut into bars.
All measurements at Australian/English so 250ml cup, 20ml tablespoon.
