Best books on poultry keeping?
DS wants to get us a book on keeping chooks, he's super excited about getting some chooks in the new year and he's as keen as I am to learn, bless his cotton's!!
Do you have books on keeping cooks and if so which would you recommend? Also, any books I should steer clear of?

Re: Best books on poultry keeping?
Keeping Pet Chickens by Johannes Paul and William Windham, the designers of the Eglu, is good for basics. There's a book called Keeping a Few Hens in Your Garden by Francine Raymond which is often recommended for beginners but I don't really think it's much cop - nice enough in a Country Living type of way but not all that useful.

Katie Thear ...her books are pretty good on most stuff...the Smallholding one is a bit out of date IMO, but the Chickens and the Dairying ones are used a lot here....
There is a load of useful info on the Omlet Forum, without actually buying a book, although the Omlet book is very good.

Re: Best books on poultry keeping?
I second Katie Thear. She is very wise regarding all things fowl.
TBH I can't think of anything in basic chicken-keeping that you would need a book for though. Between info on websites and advice from members on good green forums (hem hem) you should have all the info you need.
If it were me I would spend the money on a copy of John Seymour's Complete Self-Sufficiency or Carla Emery's Encyclopaedia of Country Living, either of which will tell you all you need to know about keeping chooks and a very great deal more besides.
I can never recommend Carla Emery enough. If I found myself with a large smallholding and room for only one book, it would be that one and I would be pretty confident.

Re: Best books on poultry keeping?
Funnily enough Billy - I've just pulled Complete self sufficiency off the bookshelf! I'll have a good read of that, and I shall also look into Carla Emery's book too, thanks for the heads up on that one!
The chicken book was as much for DS as for me plus I do tend to like to over read and my thing for books
I will of course be using one particular excellent green forum full of wonderfully clever people
