I was just going to suggest something on those lines. an old display cabinet is also good. Some use old boxes. Main thing is to try & make the scale 1inch = 1 foot. That is the scale of most of what you buy, & for someone who makes bits is the easiest.

If you use old boxes, make sure you sand it well to get the splinters of.

For anyone that has the cash, they can be picked up at car boots, or charity shops & with a bit of work can be made in into really nice houses.

For more cash you can buy flat packs which are more difficult to put together but come with instructions. Win the lottery & you can buy a readymade, decorated & furnished house.

Sindy & Barbie sized things are a bit differrent, just have to take the scale from the doll. Sometimes heavy duty cardboard boxes work well,
they do need a bit of strength added, but if you get the girls to help you they will be a bit more carefull. An old fashioned orange box might be a good size, if you can get them.

The kitchen, I like Dandelion`s idea, again car boots or skips may be good places to look. With a couple of pots of paint should turn out really well.

Depending on the size, Jean Greenhowe does some dead easy knitted food.

Tops from all sorts of tubes make good flower pots with a bit of paint & some mini flowers in them.

A florist will usually have some scraps that they will let you have for pence.

For MrS & his castle.

Metal buttons make good shields

Sword shaped cocktail sticks painted make good swords.

Chainmail, a loose piece of knitting sprayed gray.

A few ideas, I may think up some more!!

Cut the pointy bit off a cocktail stick & smooth it off, paint it any colour you want. Stick a pretty bead on the top, a silver stripe just below the bead, result is a walking stick for a 1/12th dolls house.

Old jewelry findings are very useful for all sorts of things, dishes etc

With beads threaded onto a dress makers pin, they can make perfume bottles or jars.

A cheap way to make jewellry for fashion dolls or dolls houses is to look at the packets of nail decorations. They come in many shapes & designs and are very useful. I have used them to decorate windows & doors or small china plates.

Small milk/cream containers from a cafe make good buckets with a coat of paint & a piece of wire for a handle.

Coffee stirrers from the same places make all sorts of things including fences or wooden crates

Film canisters make good dustbins etc

Can't recall last time I had a film canister though. 35mm film seems to have all but disappeared.

Yes Kristy, we can get fabric squares, good as table clothes, serviettes etc.

I cheat Billy, I use the canisters my diabetic test strips come in, also if you go into one of the photo shops, they will often give you a bag for free, also good for beads etc.

A lot depends on the size of the dolls. There are several sizes for dolls houses. Best thing to do is measure the dolls & look for any available magazines or borrow some books from a library & make some notes as to what you want.

All the talk of tester pots of paint in the tearoom makes me remember that they are also a good size for dolls houses.

In the charity shop I managed to get what they called a mousemat, but it certainly made a very nice persian type carpet. Well worth keeping eyes open.

A piece of pretty lace can be trimmed to make table mats, table runners or antimacasers.

Some crochet doilies make very nice mats.

An old & thin flannel can be cut up to make towels etc

Pepper seeds make excellant crisps. Other seeds can be used for different food items, just need to stand & stare for a few minutes.

For Christmas trees, cake decorations are just right, a few beads & some tinsel & away you go.
