Recycled houses

I saw this clip the other day and thought it was really inspiring, both from the point of view of salvaging materials which would otherwise have been thrown away, and also because of the skills which are taught. (And the houses look beautiful!)

I did wonder whether the planning laws in the US are more flexible than in the UK - I could imagine all kinds of petty quibbles occurring if dwellings this like went up over here. When we had our loft conversion done, I was amazed at how much power the planning dept had. Because the loft already had been used as a storage room (it had a window in but no stairs) we didn't need formal planning permission, but we still had to install fire doors in all our rooms and make other alterations for 'safety' before we were allowed the go-ahead. (The inverted commas are there because one thing we had to do was to replace some obscured glass in one internal door with plywood, because if there was a fire the glass might explode. Can't say if this is true because we've never had a fire, but what does happen on a weekly basis is that someone inside the now-very-safe utility room opens the door into the hall, and nearly brains another family member who is standing in the wrong place. There was a reason for that glass panel....)

What a brilliant idea. I hope that it gets adopted right across America. I can foresee a few stumbling blocks in this country though. As you said Dandelion - the planning department wields SUCH power.

Planning has its place. I can see the good in it but we do need to common sense too and that often seems to be lacking
