Tomato plants!

I have tomato plants, in my unheated polytunnel, in flower!

At least 3 weeks early... Shocked

All "potato leaf" varieties...Yellow Perfection, Latah and Black Russian.

Latah is a russian early type ( like " Sub Arctic plenty" )so am not surprised but the other two am a bit shocked.

Have a tiny tomato on one of the Latah plants....

At this rate will be eating first tomato at end of May Shocked

Downside is...I have to crack on and put them into their final bucket pots! Which means digging out a load of compost to put in the bottom of the bckets...all 50 of them....

Don't usually need to do that until mid May, at the earliest....

Also means Polytunnel will become productive growing area a month or so early, which knocks out my normal use of it as glorified, large, planting/storage/shed type area....

need another polytunnel I think...hmmmm that is an plan?

Very happy with my tomatoes this year; they are well ahead. The first truss of some have marble sized tomatoes, and the flowers of the 3rd truss are starting to open ! Can I beat my record of first tomato by mid June ? I hope so

I have flowers showing on the two tomatoes I rescued (reduced in Wyevale as someone had forgotten to water them) - a yellow cherry tomato and a beefsteak. My own Black Russian seedlings have only just been potted on for the first time so have a long way to go yet.

I think my tomatoes are ahead too, but seeing as last year they all died quite early on as I was struggling to water them (very large bump by this stage last year!) I'm hoping they will last the weekend in my little mini-greenhouse and then next week I think I need to plant them out. As so many failed last year I've ended up with loads of plants as I transferred extra seeds "just in case". Have managed to give a couple away to another local mum I know, but may still have a bit of an excess unless LMC decides she likes tomatoes before then! (I may have to train her!)

All just boring gardeners delight here as that's all I had at seed sewing time.

! I hated them as a kid, and DS hates them now. But, we have a hand cranked passata machine (from Seeds of Italy) which he enjoys using, and happily eats the resulting pasta sauces. So that would be my tip for dealing with big surplusses.

Mrs C - let me know if you have a tomato surplus and I'll take some off your hands!

I would offer to swap them for cucumber plants, but so far my seeds have not germinated. Will; plant some more over the weekend.

I HAD some of my usual cucumber plants but something has eaten them all...so I now have to try to either buy more OR grow some, pronto............... Shocked

My tomatos are doing well but I have decided not to do cues this year. Oh is the only person that eats them & they are always reasonable at the farm shop. I have got some gerkins though.
