Bio Urn - turns you into a tree... 57105910

You don't find many designers working in the funeral business thinking about more creative ways for you to leave this world (and maybe they should be). However, Spanish designer Martin Azua has combined the romantic notion of life after death with an eco solution to the dirty business of the actual, you know, transition.

His Bios Urn is a biodegradable urn made from coconut shell, compacted peat and cellulose and inside it contains the seed of a tree. Once your remains have been placed into the urn, it can be planted and then the seed germinates and begins to grow. You even have the choice to pick the type of plant you would like to become, depending on what kind of planting space you prefer.

I, personally, would much rather leave behind a tree than a tombstone. linky

I LIKE that! thanks for the info. I'd better find somebody sympathetic to the notion to have decisions rights over that type of things before I peg it!

I have gone through the swings and roundabouts of indecision over my post death disposal. I was all for cremation until my dads. His left me with a tremendous sense of dissatisfaction, my grandfathers burial was a much more satisfying conclusion.

I quite like the idea of cremation then my descendants planting me to grow a tree

Nice idea, but not really green - trouble is that cremation is pretty energy intensive. Though not nearly so much as what was done with Gene Roddenberry's mortal remains - I quite fancy my last journey being into space - I would never have the nerve (or cash !) to do it whilst alive.

I wouldn't mind being buried and turned into compost for a nice tree.... there are options like that, aren't there?

A former colleague of mine was buried in a woven willow casket and had a tree planted on the spot, so yes, things like that can be done.

Another ex-colleague who spent his life in agricultural research took his final ride to the graveyard on a tractor and trailer - his wife knew that is what would have pleased him most. I have worked with some strange folk in the past. By some standards, I'm completely normal Wink
