Which tomatoes are you growing in 2012?

As I looked at my little tomato plants balancing on the windowsill this morning (er, that was the tomatoes doing the balancing, not me...) I thought it would be interesting to know which varieties people are growing, and perhaps at the end of the season to say how they all performed and tasted. I've got:

Black Russian
Yellow Brandywine
Aunty Madge's (from the Heritage Seed Library - small and sweet!)
Amish Gold (via the HSL, direct from the people who preserve the variety)
Alicante (because I grow some plants for my mother every year, and she likes 'normal' tomatoes!!)

Some are just coming up, and some have been potted on, but all seem to be doing OK so far.

I potted mine up just yesterday, last stage before going into the beds. very good they look too this year. I have:

Andine Cornue - had bad blossom end rot last year, could have been my watering, so 2nd chance !
San Marzano redorta F1 (Seeds of Italy) - still looking for the best paste type.
Royale des Guineaux - came out tops in our taste test last year, ahead of Harbinger and Iowa.
Yellow perfection - reliable early yellow salad tomato
Yellow stuffer - seed from my dad; for Greek Yemista - stuffed tomatoes and peppers.

Plus two from seed saved from tomatoes bought at the market in Quimper, Brittany, one is a long red type a bit like Andine Cornue, and the other looks very like Orange Russian.

I'll also be sowing some Garden pearl for containers/baskets outside in the next week or two.

Blimey! You people put me to shame. But for what it's worth, I am growing Latah in the greenhouse - not because they really need the protection, but to get crops as early as possible. And I haven't yet planted seed for the outdoor tomatoes, which will be Gardener's Delight and Rose de Berne. R de B is new to me. Grew both last year, and both started to make fruits. The man wanted tomato for his sandwich, so I sent him down the garden as I was sure they would be ready - he came back saying all the plants were dead! I lost the entire crop virtually overnight, and I don't know why. So I will be trying again this year.

Well, so far most of the toms are looking as though they will survive, if not exactly flourishing. I'm relieved that despite all the rain none of the plants are showing any signs of blight (I suppose it hasn't been warm enough for blight to really get going, so there is a silver lining to the weather!) All the plants, both outside and in the shed/greenhouse have green fruit - all except the Amish Gold, which has been a disappointment. The two plants have ultra large flowers, and the only fruit which has formed has gone rotten. I wonder if it's a genetic mutation, or maybe this is the reason that its popularity died out! TBH none of the seeds which I've had from the Hereitage Seed Library have done brilliantly, except for the tomato Auntie Madge which looks as if it will have a decent crop. But then it has been a testing year for growing anything!

I've been eating Latah tomatoes from the greenhouse for about 3 weeks now. Plenty of flower on the others, but it's all very slow this year.

My tomatoes are not doing too bad considering the weather. The yellow perfection are producing well now. The French unknown seeds are doing fairly well too, the pointed red one looks a bit like a oxheart type, and is flavoursome if sharp. The one saved from a tomato closely resembling orange Russian has produced red/orange/yellow streaked beafsteak fruits of good flavour. Good result.

The Andine Cornue is again heavily affected by blossom end rot. A real waste of greenhouse space which will not get another chance. The San Marzano redorta (Seeds of Italy) is really promising though, only a couple of fruits showing BER (good for a plum type) and heavily loaded with good sized fruit.

My outdoor garden pearl plants are looking very happy so far too.

Have just discovered that Yellow Perfection* in a pot in the greenhouse has blossom end rot too. (I only saw it because I was sitting on a low seat to plant some seeds, and looked up at the tomatoes.) Haven't had this for about 15 years, not since I grew tomatoes in growbags. Have given a dollop of tomatoe feed and will keep an eye on watering.
* Ironic name, eh?

I really like yellow perfection, and grow it almost every year. Early, clean, tasty, prolific - nice tomato.

I have a theory about the blossom end rot. It is often said to be due to erratic watering, but it is only indirectly true; it is due to inadequate calcium uptake, which can be a result of low water uptake. So, rather than erratic watering, my theory is that the damp conditions this year mean that the tomatoes are not taking up much water, and thus calcium with it.

I guess that I use water butt water when I have it (and do I have enough this year ), instead of our really rather hard tap water, probably reduces the calcium they get too. I've top dressed with a handful of bonemeal per pot, I hope it helps.
