Secrets of the Castle Empty Secrets of the Castle

Post by Chilli-head 19th November 2014, 3:15 pm

Anyone watch this ? BBC2, started last night.  Ok, not much of a warning, but it is on Iplayer.

Ruth Goodman et al are back, this time over in France visiting an epic attempt to build a medieval castle using traditional methods.  The melodramatic presentation can be irritating, but some good demonstrations of traditional crafts.  This episode had woodworking (including a pole lathe), pottery, a blacksmith, stonemasonry (obviously) and probably some I've forgotten.

I enjoved the woodworking, though I doubt the finished product was made using just the methods or materials described - he began by splitting what looked like ash logs and axing them into planks, to make a storage box for grain that appeared, when finished, to be made from oak (which would be much harder to spit) and seemed suspiciously well finished if done just with an axe ...

The potter was great.  I loved his round bottomed cooking pot.  He made it look so easy, which is a sure sign of great skill.

Look out for appearances by the slowest and most weary looking cart horse I have ever seen !

Oh bother - saw an article in The Times at the weekend, but didn't realise the series was imminent

Anyone else still watching ?

I've got it on series record. The last episode was about interior decor, and was surprisingly more interesting than I had expected. Not much of the interior is left to see in surviving castles, and so my mental picture is one of bare, cold gray stone. But not so ...

Anyone interested in learning more can look here - Guédelon is a castle with a website !

You can even join in the building:

I've been recording the series on BBC4 about the castles of Britain instead, as I kept forgetting the BBC2 one.
Both my daughters passed their A level History, and commented that it had made all the trips to castles in their childhood worth it! (We did go to rather a lot...)
