Re: What are you harvesting today?
That's done really well then. Actually, I've just looked at mine and it's taller than I thought. Enough for a crumble I think. The main reason I covered it was to make the spot visible because we had a machine working on the yard / garden boundary putting up new fencing and I asked the driver to avoid it if possible - some got squashed but most survived.

It tends to run out of steam really quickly though. I'm thinking about trying another variety as well that will start later but give me a longer cropping season. Rhubarb can be quite attractive, so I reckon I could find space for it somewhere in the garden.

Re: What are you harvesting today?
My purple spouting broccoli has finally sprouted, so I have something to harvest. The Kale is starting to grow again, hopefully I can take some more off that as it tries to run to seed. It makes a great hortopita (Greek cheese pie with greens).

Re: What are you harvesting today?
I grew some of the dark, crinkle leaved kale just to add to winter salad leaves. I noticed it was starting to make flower, so picked them off (like purple sprouting shoots) and steamed them along with some of the smaller leaves for dinner tonight. Generally I'm not a fan of kale, but this was good. Definitely going to repeat next winter.

Re: What are you harvesting today?
I wish I could recommend a later variety, but the only one I've had any success with is Timperley Early. I've tried Victoria, which just didn't thrive, and also Champagne - it thrived, but always tasted oddly earthy. I was really disappointed - I knew it wasn't actually going to taste like champagne, but I did expect it to at least taste nice!!freebird wrote:It tends to run out of steam really quickly though. Re: What are you harvesting today?
I forgot to say - wild rocket. Not pandered to in the greenhouse either, but volunteer plants in the garden veg plot. It is not as tasty as in high summer, but still good.
We had hortopita (Greek cheese and greens pie) with kale from the lotty tonight. Yesterday PSB as a veg side dish.
The saladings in the greenhouse have emerged, do hopefully some thinnings soon.

Re: What are you harvesting today?
The first rhubarb, made into a compote with oranges. It's just as well the rhubarb is looking healthy, as two of the apple trees have very little blossom, so it'll be a fallow year for them. I haven't inspected the third tree yet (Beauty of Kent), but it's not a heavy cropper. The fourth is a miniature tree, bought by one of my daughters in her 'horticultural phase' but left behind when she moved out. The blossom is looking good, but it's only tiny. So I'll be aiming to freeze as much rhubarb as possible for the winter.

Re: What are you harvesting today?
I've been harvesting some very nice rhubarb too.
Ive also had good, chunky spring onions from the polytunnel. It was some lateish seed I put in last year, just because there was a space. It didn't come to much and got left over winter with no watering so it's a bonus.

Re: What are you harvesting today?
I planted 10 crowns, Dandelion, but only 7 are apparent this year. Should be enough though, so long as I look after it. We don't eat bucketloads of the stuff.

You've done well with the asparagus considering your location Freebird. I tried it once, total failure and the bed rapidly disappeared under the weeds.

I think it helps that I've grown it before and know what to do and what to expect.

Re: What are you harvesting today?
We had some lovely strawberries from the polytunnel today. I did pick off 2 big, juicy ones a few days ago as there was nothing else turning red but there were enough today for a couple if bowlfuls.

Re: What are you harvesting today?
I came in this afternoon with strawberries from the greenhouse, my first sugar snap peas also from the greenhouse and some more asparagus. Picked first summer salad leaves yesterday.

Re: What are you harvesting today?
We had a cucumber, broad beans, first potatoes, strawberries. New seasons garlic and some oregano. Cucumber went on sandwiches for lunch, barbecued lamb marinated with the oregano and garlic, with the potatoes and beans for dinner. Some beans went into the freezer too.

Re: What are you harvesting today?
That sounds lovely, CH.
Not such a bountiful harvest here (the broad beans are very slow and late this year). The strawberries are fairly new plants, and also a bit slow to take off - it's also a new variety, and I have been waiting for them to be really red before I pick them, but found out today that they're not a really red variety, and are sweet and juicy enough when a bit pale.

Re: What are you harvesting today?
First cucumber at last, and first raspberries. Strawberries quite fruitful, and although greenhouse sugar snaps are coming to an end, the outdoor ones are just starting to make pods.
My attempt at growing pea shoots for salad didn't work - after the first cut of shoots I looked at the baby plants and thought, That's potentially a decent crop of peas! Just started picking those peas this week!

Re: What are you harvesting today?
Yay - tomatoes!! Well done FB!
Mine are still green, but should ripen in a week or two.
It's that time of year when things are just starting, and I'm coming in from the garden with a handful of fruit (so it's muesli for breakfast, or fruit salad for tea) or a handful of peas to cook with something else. I did find some more ripe peas today, but as there were only two decent pods, I ate them without even taking them inside!!
