My newest newbies have all started laying
MY newest batch of POL hens have all now started laying
Pearl the Leghorn has been laying for 10 weeks, but was 24 weeks when I got her..the others were only 16 weeks old though so have now started laying at 26 weeks ish..which is pretty good for this time of year
Pearl lays pearl white eggs, Lavender (a Bluebell) lays browny plum eggs, Mac ( Light Sussex) lays tinted brown eggs and Bunty ( Rhode Rock) lays light brown eggs.
SO today, out of 9 laying hens, I had 9 eggs
The other 5 older hens are all moulting and balding and grumpy and egg less...and living in the re named "Menopausal Mansion" at the mo....

Re: My newest newbies have all started laying
How lovely, CW!! I got 3 lil silkies I hatched.. mad as anything, they make me giggle cos they so look like cartoon hens... I don't even know what sex they are yet, they're 4 months old soo I guess I'll have to keep waiting
No eggs here at all, my maran's have just maulted and now the clocks have changed I don't think I'll be getting any for a while...
Re: My newest newbies have all started laying
I have 3 Cream Legbar chicKs Lottie , hatched out by mama hen Broody Ruby the chicks are beautifully marked, the 2 little pullets have a crest of feathers a bit like a silklie on their heads ( but not as much) which makes them look like punks .. the cockerel is very white with spangles and ( at the mo) v friendly...but I expect that won't last
Silkies are very sweet

Re: My newest newbies have all started laying
Well I scared them all witless ( can hens be scared witless, as they have so few wits to start with?)
I went out to do the final lock in and check wearing a head torch...the newbies and the chicklets haven't seen me in THAT before and becane hysterical.... :affraid:

Re: My newest newbies have all started laying
Oh dear, tonight we were late back ( CG birthday celebrations) and there was a hen missing from the houses...
I searched, CM searched, we spent nearly an hour looking.....finally found Ginger crouched, shivering with fear in a very low level shrub...I was looking for her perching in a bush or tree as all the others have done that but no..she had crawled under a tangle of dead flowers in the base of a rose bush.....
She is very scared and cold..but is now in with her friends and hopefully will be ok..
so good vibes and crossed fingers Ginger is OK tomorrow morning....

My little Cream Legbar, Vanilla has just laid her first egg...lovely
blue green colour
Guess
her sister Custard will lay soon as well...They are ( thinks) 26 weeks old.
Spot the Cockerel is no longer friendly, though...I fear he may have to be re homes in the large white cold shed in the corner of the utility room soon....

Re: My newest newbies have all started laying
Our 5 have earned themselves a reprieve this week. Since before Christmas we have been down to 1 egg every 2 or 3 days.
Last weekend we finally decided enough was enough and to chop all but one of them and start anew.
Since Monday we have had 3 or 4 eggs every day... guess they heard.
