How Many Different Uses Can We Find For... Bicycle innertubes...
"Underground, Overground, Wombling Free,
The Wombles of Wimbledon Common are we.
Making good use of the things that we find,
Things that the everyday folks leave behind.
We're so incredibly, utterly devious
Making the most of everything.
Even bottles and tins.
Pick up the pieces and make them into something new,
Is what we do!"
The lyrics from the first & last verse of "The Wombling Song"
Thinking of Elisabeth Beresford who passed away over the Xmas period, I thought it may be nice to pick an everyday object each month & see how many different ideas for uses we can come up with...

I'm going to fail on this one I think - having never even touched a bicycle inner tube!

I carry a piece in my emergency fire lighting kit - it pongs a bot when burning but will catch light even after immersion in water and in driving rain and burns well and long - long enough to get a fire going in aforementioned wet conditions.
Also you can cut small pieces off it to use as rubber bands to secure stuff in emergency situations.

Oh, and I also often use bits to cushion stuff I am transporting in the landy to prevent friction/bashing of surfaces against the roof-rack or points of contact inside.

The make great bungees (although not suitable for jumping off bridges!).
They can be woven to make seat bases.
They make a great sling when muppets fall off their bikes in the middle of no where

If I had had a spare bicycle inner tube at the weekend I would have used it to make a waterproof seal on my shed door, cut into a length and stapled up where the door meets the wall of the shed. I used a folded up carrier bag cut into a long strip instead, but an inner tube would have been ideal.

I'm beginning to think I may need an innertube just in case now...

Be careful, they're sneaky things and one is never enough... Before you know it you'll have a box full in the shed and loads of old tyres hanging from the shed roof.MrsC wrote:I'm beginning to think I may need an innertube just in case now...

Sadly, no, it's not just you. I've got perhaps half a dozen tires in my shed, three new, and probably an equal amount of "might still be good" tubes. And, for a family of six, I think we've got at least ten bicycles. Might be good for barter goods though, lol.

Yes. It is.
But then, I have old racing tyres hanging around and mag wheels and I haven't fired up a racing car since 1995...but still have all the parts....
AND I collect all sorts of other "stuff" so I wouldn't worry....you are in good company, just we have different " collectables"!

Mr D says you can use an inner tube for resistance training - he was strengthening his arm muscles for archery, and was recommended to use inner tubes to mimic drawing a bow.

Those exercise tubes look just like inner tubes so I can't see why not use them tbh!

I spoke too soon. On my way back home from a walk with LMC this afternoon I got a puncture in the buggy. Mr C's had a look at it and declared that I need a new inner tube for the tyre! So I guess that mean you can add fixing buggy wheels to the list Spar. Now i just need to find one the right size, or see if Mothercare actually sell them!

A buggy with inner tubes? Is it like the jogging type buggy? I've only seen pneumatic tires on buggy's built for running in US.

Re: How Many Different Uses Can We Find For... Bicycle innertubes...
Not a proper jogging type one, but one I bought specifically because I walk a LOT with LMC - probably about 10 miles a week. Bearing in mind the pavements here are a disgrace it makes for a more comfortable ride for LMC too. Just the back wheels are pneumatic ones on mine, although I have seen some with 4 pneumatic tyres.

We have a Land Rover 3 wheel off road buggy which has pneumatic tyres. And the Jane double buggy has not only pneumatic tyres but disc brakes... seriously.

Non slip handle covers for tools, though they used to make your hands very dirty.

If you do plaster casting, or slip casting, using large plaster moulds you can use an inner tube to hold the bits together while you're casting it.
