How Many Different Uses Can We Find For... A Clothes Peg...
"Underground, Overground, Wombling Free,
The Wombles of Wimbledon Common are we.
Making good use of the things that we find,
Things that the everyday folks leave behind.
We're so incredibly, utterly devious
Making the most of everything.
Even bottles and tins.
Pick up the pieces and make them into something new,
Is what we do!"
The lyrics from the first & last verse of "The Wombling Song"
Thinking of Elisabeth Beresford who passed away over the Xmas period, I thought it may be nice to pick an everyday object each month & see how many different ideas for uses we can come up with...
To kick it all off for January I have picked a "clothes peg"...

re fastening opened packets in the food cupboards
and when I was at school we all had to have one with our name on in our plimsoll bag so that we could keep our wellies together when we wore them to walk to school in the rain.

Paint different colours and use to hang cards on a "washing line" inside.
Xmas cards, birthday cards, alphabet or number cards...the choice is yours...

Playing in outside concerts, most of us use clothes pegs to stop the music blowing, about. I would add the Bournmouth Symphany Orchestra do it as well
Making models or table mats, when you have taken them to pieces.

Have used the spring part as the mechanical power source for a project with middle son in school. Made a marshmallow catapult using a spoon as the launching basket.

Fantastically useful for pinning muslins over my pram/buggy when LMC wants a sleep, or to keep the sun out of her eyes. I keep a couple in the buggy for that purpose.
Mr C also recently repaired a door latch mechanism by installing a clothes peg spring in it!

Making puppet alligators.
Some people clip them onto sensitive parts of their bodies as part of sado-masochist activites.
Making puppet alligators is more fun IMO.

When you are cooking you can clip one to the end of a spoon or other utensil to stop it sliding into a bowl, or saucepan etc...

On the same lines as Lottie, put them back together and hang up the washing.
I just remember a few years ago sitting in a family gathering where there was a humble clothes peg in bits on the kitchen table. I was very surprised that no one other than me knew how to put it back together. This probably says a lot about the rest of my family but just incase anyone would like to know but is afraid to ask…
Look at the spring carefully with its arms sticking out horizontally. The arm that leaves the spring at the top of the coil will need to go down behind the bottom wooden piece.
Some springs are very strong so start by teasing the lower wooden piece through the arms so that the arms are behind the wooden piece and the spring is on top in the “belly” spring housing.
Put the arm of the spring that comes from the top of the spring into the groove of the wooden piece and stretch the other arm over to the “inner side” of the bottom piece.
Take the top wooden piece, belly side down and wriggle the wedge end under the arm of the spring. Slide top wooden piece until the top arm of the spring is in its groove.

We used clothes pegs last year to anchor netting around a miniature cherry tree to keep the birds and chickens off - we brought the sides of the net together and pegged them. I also use pegs to anchor fleece around newly planted runner bean plants when the weather gets chilly, pegging the fleece to the bean sticks.

The metal springy bit is strong enough to jack cars off the ground in the event of puncture, although the wooden bits are not, nor long enough so you have to fashion extensions out of sturdier material.

Well, Billy, I suppose there may be potential energy there to support it, but by the time you get the stroke length, you've lost your mechanical advantage. Hmmm. Maybe if I put a few hundred of them in series.....

If you straighten out the metal bit a bit sterilise it properly it can be used to perform an emergency keyhole frontal lobotomy. Those of you who remember Dr Hank Wangford may be interested to know he once did this on a bartop in a remote village in Alaska.

Thanks Billy
Hmm, think I'll take your word for that, I suppose you could rub the two wooden bits together so that they would ignite & use them to sterilise the metal bit, but then you would need something else small enough to make sure you didn't scoop out the good bit...
A pair of chop sticks perhaps, or even cocktail sticks, but nobody has suggested them yet...
