How Many Different Uses Can We Find For... A Coat Hanger...
"Underground, Overground, Wombling Free,
The Wombles of Wimbledon Common are we.
Making good use of the things that we find,
Things that the everyday folks leave behind.
We're so incredibly, utterly devious
Making the most of everything.
Even bottles and tins.
Pick up the pieces and make them into something new,
Is what we do!"
The lyrics from the first & last verse of "The Wombling Song"
Thinking of Elisabeth Beresford who passed away over the Xmas period, I thought it may be nice to pick an everyday object each month & see how many different ideas for uses we can come up with...
For February suggested by Dandelion picked by Pol "a coat hanger"...

Cut it open next to the hook, straighten out the wire, flatten out the hook end and it becomes a useful tool for all sorts of things eg unbunging a vac cleaner hose...

Once cut open ( see above) the wire can be cut into lengths for all sorts of uses!

Flute's stolen my Blue Peter idea! (How are you old enough to remember that? Or did you see it on Giles and Sue over Christmas???)
Unbent coat hangers have been used for a multitude of DIY style jobs here, mainly involving unblocking something. Also, you can use one to make a peg bag for the washing line.

It is perhaps a sign of the way the world has changed that nobody would be seen dead using one as a car radio aerial anymore, which was commonplace when I was a kid

Nah, they repeat it every year. At least they did when I watched it. Thinking back, they must have had van loads of the things if they redid it every year, not to mention the ones 'I did earlier'.

Aha..... Flute (and Mrs C) I was going to say the very same thing and I'm far older than both of you!!!! We actually made one once. My mum also made crib characters using toilet rolls and wooden balls for heads, dressed in scraps of material from clothes she'd made for us. She still has it 40 years on
anyway...back to coat hangers.....my dad made rocking dolls' cradles for me and my sister using wooden coat hangers as the rockers.

I hang a muslin from one when making jellies etc. Just tie all four corners on and then hang from convenient place

With a battery and lamp or buzzer, you could make a metal hanger into one of those games where you have to pass the hoop over the wiggly wire without touching and setting off the buzzer - if you know what I mean. You may have to sand off any lacquer first.

Made into a circle, attatched to a rod, add a net & it makes a good pond cleaner, or shrimping net.

I was going to say the Blue Peter decoration too.
I used a hanger to make a peg bag, it hangs nicely on the washing line.

Put in the right shape, can be passed through the window to unlock the car if you've left the keys dangling in the ignition switch. Window not down a bit? Use a wedge in the door frame to make a space just big enough to pass the wire through. Not just for car theives anymore!

Implement of torture. Seem to recall Patrick Bateman outlining the technique in American Psycho. (see now why you should never trust a Phil Collins fan?)

Make a temporary mobile - tie baby toys attached to ribbons on the hanger and hang it securely near a baby's chair for them to watch

Re: How Many Different Uses Can We Find For... A Coat Hanger...
Even without checking to make sure not duplications (but there are so many uses for anealed wire of this size)
a) Made into a tool to clear the air back plate holes of our "Defiant". It would be easy to use almost anything from the front doors (what you open for an open fire) but when the stove is in full time use that could be messy with ashes heaped there. By straightening the wire and bending the end cm at a right angle can poke clear the holes from the normal feeding door if they get ashes inot them.
b) Bird perches for our squirrel proof feeders. Birds like chickadees, titmous, nuthatches, etc. have no trouble at all clinging to the mesh (that keeps* squirrels from reaching the seeds) but for many species they want more branch like perches, especially larger birds like cardinals. Take lengths and make a loop with ends woven into the mesh to support it.
