What about some book reviews? Give us an idea of what is in the books that you read or use, & possibly the best place to buy them.

My starter is Hints & Tips from Times Past. a Readers Digest Book.
Best places to buy Amazon, Fleabay or charity shops.

A really brill book that gives recipes & how tos from the past. All seem to be usable today. There are hints for
Health
Beauty
Home
Kitchen
Garden
Would make a great gift for someone just starting in there own home who is eco & money minded.
Lots of ideas.

A really wonderful book is
Moss Gardening including lichens, liverworts and other miniatures
by GEORGE SCHENK

The author is a moss gardener that helps and gardens around the world. His love for this simple but fascinating plant form oozes from the pages. Its wonderful to read and has some beautiful and inspiring photos, lots of practical advise and the offer of stepping into the warm and gentle world of the moss.

I've just found this one (sorry, never did learn to do the clever linky thing):

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Simple-Crochet-Erika-Knight/dp/184400015X/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1266860409&sr=1-1

in a charity shop & it looks really good - contemporary ideas with nice clear instructions & simple stiches. Ideal for a beginner, which is good as I'm inspired to have a go at the slippers although I've never tried crochet before.

Shadows of the Workhouse by Jennifer Worth

If you are intersted in social history or know of ancestors that were in the workhouse , this is a book that will open your eyes & fill them with tears.

Written about the 1950s, a true story of a young nurse/midwife who knew people that had lived the workhouse life, or lived with the threat of it. Also about some Nun`s who nursed the people from the tenements of London.

Well recommended

For step by step veg gardening written with wildlife in mind in very straight forward easy going language, but not written to make you feel stupid, it has to be any of the "Dirty Nails" books.

His observations of the growing process, weather, seasons, wildlife & life in general are so laid back, just spot on...

Perfect....

I think I am going back to my teens.

Just re read for the zillionth time

KING SOLOMANS MINES by H Rider Haggard.

An old fashioned adventure, quite different from the films & a lot more exciting. Alan Quatermain is one of my heros. :geek:

Just reading back - COTW - I've got that crochet book and it's fantastic. Just wish my skills were good enough for the leather log basket that's in there as it looks fab!

I've just finished 'Mr Pip' by Lloyd Jones - it is narrated by a young girl on a tropical island which is caught up in a civil war. The only white man on the island teaches the children as their school has closed down, and he uses 'Great Expectations' to teach them from as it's the only book available. The style is easy to read - it ranges from humour to quite harrowing violence, all related in the same matter-of-fact way. I'm glad I read it.

Holiday reading was RIVER THIEVES by Michael Crummey
What a book. Based I think on actual happenings in the early 1800s in Newfoundland. Tells of what was happening to a tribe of Indians & the Brits who were trying to settle, with the usual outcomes.

A really good read

I finished 'Burning Bright' by Tracy Chevallier today. It's a story which is set in the late 18th century involving a family from Dorset who move up to London, and find themselves living next door to William Blake. The story was slow to start, but I'm glad I persevered. It's brave for an American author to write a story set in another country/culture - I know I'm a bit pedantic, but I found I couldn't entirely suspend my disbelief when she had characters from rural England using American phrases. Despite this, she has obviously done a fair amount of research on Blake, and that was the aspect which interested me most.
