Re: What are you harvesting today?
Last night I harvested celeriac, giant beans, broccoli and a few raspberries. By torchlight, since I hadn't realised the days had shortened so much ...
Pumpkin carving tonight ... Good job I have my own, I thought they were a bit small, but the ones in Waitrose are pathetic !

I hope we'll see a picture.Pumpkin carving tonight wrote:
Believe it or not I've still been having a few courgettes as we've had no frost yet. GH toms are done now & plants composted. I've made a decision not to attempt peppers again until I get a polytunnel in a sunnier spot (if that ever happens). It's not worth the cost of a growbag for a few green things the size of ping pong balls. Amazingly, despite the best efforts of the cabbage whites, my brassicas are looking good. I've been using some curly kale for a few weeks now. Carrots are also first class after a shaky start.

I never, ever expected to be reporting that I have picked ripe tomatoes from the greenhouse (unheated) on 30th November. Also about 15 chillies, mainly green but a few semi-ripe, two green peppers and a single carrot. Oh and I dug my first parsnip today as I want it for dinner tomorrow.

Re: What are you harvesting today?
Tomatoes in my greenhouse just go mouldy & squishy once the temperature starts to drop. I have picked chillies around Christmas time before now, they don't seem to mind the cold.

Re: What are you harvesting today?
I still have the odd remaining tomato, and a few chillies left on. Probably won't get much riper now !
We had broccoli, parsnips, celeriac and potatoes with our roast pork today. The parsnips, Guernsey half long, were rather less than half normal length, but tasted good.

I went to the lotty this morning - what a sludgy mess. Weeds still growing, but it is probably best to keep off the soil for now.
Still, I picked some PSB, leeks and celeriac. The latter will make a nice addition to borscht with the stored beetroot.

Re: What are you harvesting today?
Not quite harvesting but I have just used the last of my stored winter squashes. I had to use up the last 3 fairly quickly as they were getting mouldy patches, I was a bit disappointed but then I realised that I had harvested them at the end of September so they have lasted 5 months which is pretty good for me - I am usually rubbish at storing produce.
I'm nearly running out in the garden, there are still a few Brussel sprouts, 3 winter cabbages and one row of carrots left then that's it, I'd better get on & clean the greenhouse.

Re: What are you harvesting today?
I've just finished some parsnip and chestnut soup that I made with a parsnip I harvested on Sunday. Still got quite a few in the ground, and some purple sprouting broccoli. The netting has all collapsed in the wind, though, and bent the plants down, so not sure if they'll come to much.

Re: What are you harvesting today?
Not much left to harvest here either - the tops of some kale plants which'll be good in a stir fry at the weekend, The chickens have obligingly finished off a few bits and pieces, and last weekend I baked the last of the beetroot. Better get the seeds going...

Re: What are you harvesting today?
Some really nice purple sprouting broccoli. I couldn't keep the cabbage whites out completely, but no pigeon damage. It's the best purple sprouting I've ever managed, and very welcome at this time of year.

My first ever spears of asparagus. A long skinny one and a very fat one. They went in the stir fry tonight.

Re: What are you harvesting today?
Three years ago. I had decided where they were to go, ordered the crowns, and then went down with flu. They arrived before I was well enough to do anything - hadn't even got the ground ready. I was praying they were well packed and not shrivelling up, but they all survived. The foxes dug up several of the young crowns in the first year - I must have replanted one of them three times. So it feels like a bit of a miracle to have actually had a harvest.

Jealous! - I planted new autumn raspberries a while ago in the bit of the garden which the chickens run about in, thinking that the raspberry canes would be too tall for the chickens to reach. Wrong - they have decimated them! haven't got time to rectify the situation now, but will be constructing some sort of cages for them next year!! (The berries not the hens...)

Re: What are you harvesting today?
The only thing I have harvested is the last of last year's carrots about a fortnight ago!
No chance of raspberries for a while yet - the flowers haven't even opened.
Dandelion, the best raspberries I get are on canes beside the cattle pens. The cows always eat the tops over the fence & I always get huge raspberries on the lower parts of the canes that they can't reach.

Re: What are you harvesting today?
Mmm, at the moment the rapsberry plants have been chewed off at ground level, despite the fact I've put netlon over in an arch shape. I think a more carefully worked out structure is needed. Thankfully the tayberry is looking laden with fruit...

Re: What are you harvesting today?
I picked a few more broad beans, and a couple of strawberries - though the slugs have had more than I have so far. Looks like some of my tomatoes are just starting to turn colour

Re: What are you harvesting today?
My strawberries are small and green (sorry - that sounds like the start of a particularly tedious folk song...) but there are plenty of wild strawberries growing along the sides af the raised beds which are doing much better. Nature, eh?

Tomatoes
Yellow perfection and Sugary Tom. Not at the peak of fragrant ripeness, but I couldn't resist any longer !
