Ham slow cooked in coca-cola is surprisingly good too.

That use should not be considered unusual. Coke syrup was originally intended as a carrier liquid for hard to stomach medicines. The caffeine (and originally also some cocaine) were stimulants to combat the depressing effects of some of the powerful cough suppresants (like turpine hydrate + codeine).

How became a "soda"? Well the original soda shops were the drug stores (chemists) and common to add a dash of whatever syrups they had that customers liked to the soda water. The "cherry coke" goes way back (add a dash of both coke syrup and cherry syrup). I was a preteen before my father got too sick to be in the store, old enough to sometimes wait on the soda fountain. You wanted a "coke" I would do a squirt or two of the coke syrup into the glass and fill with "soda" (carbonated water). You wanted a different soda; I used the appropriate syrup or mix of syrups for that one.

If you're in a hard water area it's also good for getting rid of limescale in the toilet. Pour a cheapy bottle of cola down the loo and leave it overnight. It's a bit scary in the morning as everything looks brown, but a quick scrub with the loo brush and a flush and sparkling clean loo!

I would think that is an action of the carbonic acid rather than anything to do with being cola.
If the brown upsets you, try lemonade, or even just fizzy water.

10 unusual uses for Coca Cola Empty Re: 10 unusual uses for Coca Cola

Cola is probably the best for toilet de-scaling, it has phosphoric acid in it too.

Long ago, as a student in a slightly drunken condition, I found some red wine from T***o in the cupboard, the sort that came in a cooking oil type bottle and was simply labelled "Vin de France". Too foul to drink as it was (even for desperate students), we tried to make mulled wine from it. Not having a pan to hand, we poured it into an electric kettle with whatever we had to hand that seemed suitable and switched on. The result was still vile, but having left it, forgotten, in the kettle overnight, the kettle was the cleanest it had been for years !

Everything has a use, even cheap coke and "Vin de France" 10 unusual uses for Coca Cola Icon_biggrin

I'm surprised no one has mentioned mixed with Jack Daniels - only a splash of coke though - the Black Tooth Grin.

Isn't R n' C the classic night out drink for those who like to dance around their handbags? I don't know as I don't like rum, much...and never danced around my handbag!

I used to drink rum and coke quite often in the 70s - isn't it funny how some food and drink gets locked into a certain decade? (My sister and I only recently broke it to my mother that Black Forest gateau wasn't really the dessert of the moment....)

I quite like spiced rum n'Coke. Feel right as rain the next morning. Guess I belong to the wrong decade...

Billy, if you want the coke to descale/clean your toilet, you need to empty the water from the bowl first (I recommend marigolds, a manky sponge and a bucket). I personally prefer to use clear vinegar for that. it works perfectly and no need to worry about the state of the ceramic glazing.

edited to add: I enjoyed uncle Jack's and coke in my younger years. simply because mixing these two drinks that I don't much care for made them mutually better.
