Crochet Chat / flowers and Patterns

One of my favourite blogs The Purl Bee has >>this<< amazing felted bucket hat pattern up.

Instructions below

* 1 skein of Cascade's Eco +, 100% Wool. One skein makes one hat, and two skeins makes three (don't waste yardage, though - it's quite close!). These colors, from top to bottom, are Rainier Heather 9454, Pumpkin Spice 2453, and Straw 4010. Please be aware that natural, undyed colors will require more washings to felt.
* 1 size Q crochet hook

The Pattern
Gauge

1 1/2 single crochets = 1 inch (unfelted)
Finished Size

Approximately 24 inch circumference, to fit most men.
Important Note

The yarn is doubled throughout this pattern. You can either roll your skein into two balls or pull from the inside and outside of one ball.
Begin

Chain 3 and slip stitch into the first chain to make a ring.

Round 1: Chain 1, 6 single crochet (sc) into the ring.

Note: Mark the first stitch of the next round with a removable marker. Make sure to reposition the marker at the beginning of each round to mark the new first stitch.

Round 2: 2 sc in each stitch. (12 stitches)

Round 3: Repeat Round 2. (24 stitches)

Round 4: *1 sc in next 3 stitches, 2 sc in next stitch, repeat from * to end of round. (30 stitches)

Round 5: *2 sc in next stitch, 1 sc in next 4 stitches, repeat from * to end of round. (36 stitches)

Round 6: 1 sc in each stitch.

Round 7: *1 sc in next 5 stitches, 2 sc in next stitch, repeat from * to end of round. (42 stitches)

Rounds 8 and 9: 1 sc in each stitch.

Round 10: *2 sc in next stitch, 1 sc in next 6 stitches, repeat from * to end of round. (48 stitches)

Rounds 11-13: 1 sc in each stitch.

Round 14: *1 sc in next 7 stitches, 2 sc in next stitch, repeat from * to end of round. (54 stitches)

Rounds 15-17: 1 sc in each stitch.

Round 18: *2 sc in next stitch, 1 sc in next 5 stitches, repeat from * to end of round. (63 stitches)

Round 19: 1 sc in each stitch.

Round 20: *1 sc in next 6 stitches, 2 sc in next stitch, repeat from * to end of round. (72 stitches)

Rounds 21-23: 1 sc in each stitch.

Round 24: Slip stitch in each stitch.

Weave in the ends.

Here's what your hat should like (pretty huge and wacky!)



Felting

Most people recommend a top loading washing machine for felting so that you can stop mid-cycle to check on your progress. I didn't have access to a top loader, so I just crossed my fingers and headed for my neighborhood Laundromat. I tossed each hat into its own machine along with some soap and a few tennis balls. After two hot cycles, they were perfect! So, if you have a top loader, use it, but, if not, I say, go for it!

Remember, if you're using a natural, undyed color you may have to spend a little more time at the Laundromat. Those colors can be a bit stubborn!

This pattern only takes a couple of hours, start to finish.

Now, the pattern:
I used a G hook with worsted weight yarn

Head
1. ch 2, 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook
2. 2 sc in each sc around
3. sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc around
4. sc in next 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc around
5. sc in next 3 sc, 2 sc in next sc around
6. sc in next 4 sc, 2 sc in next sc around
7. sc in next 5 sc, 2 sc in next sc around
8. sc in next 6 sc, 2 sc in next sc around
9. sc in next 7 sc, 2 sc in next sc around
10. sc in next 8 sc, 2 sc in next sc around
11-23. sc in each sc around
24. sc in next 8 sc, dec over 2 sc around
25. sc in next 7 sc, dec over 2 sc around
26. in back loops only, sc in next 6 sc, dec over 2 sc around
27. in both loops again, sc in next 5 sc, dec over 2 sc around
28. sc in next 4 sc, dec over 2 sc around
29. sc in next 3 sc, dec over 2 sc around. start stuffing here.
30. sc in next 2 sc, dec over 2 sc around
31. sc in next sc, dec over 2 sc around
32. dec over 2 sc around, sl st in next st, finish off, leaving a long tail for sewing.

whipstitch through remaining sc and pull tight to close hole. Secure well and push needle through bottom center to top center. Secure at top without making the head dented, then push the needle to the bottom again and trim.

Triangle Nose
1. ch 2, 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook
2. 2 sc in each sc around
3. sc in next 3 sc, 2 sc in next sc, sc in next 4 sc, 2 sc in next sc, sc in next 3 sc
4. sc in next 4 sc, 2 sc in next sc, sc in next 5 sc, 2 sc in next sc, sc in next 3 sc, sl st in next sc, finish off, leaving a long tail for sewing.
stuff, pin to face, shaping it as needed while you sew.

Round Nose
1. ch 2, 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook
2. 2 sc in each sc around
3. sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc around
4-5. sc in each sc around
6. sc in next sc, dec over 2 sc around, sl st in next st, finish off, leaving a long tail for sewing.
stuff, pin to face and sew on.

Ears
crochet to round 5 of nose, sl st in next st, finish off, leaving a long tail for sewing.
press ear in half and make it curve slightly. Pin to head level with the nose (try the glasses on here to make sure it fits well) and sew them on.

Oval Eyes
1. ch 2, 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook
2. 2 sc in each sc around
3. sc in next 2 sc, hdc in next sc, 2 dc in next sc, hdc in next sc, sc in next 3 sc, hdc in next sc, 2 dc in next sc, sc in next 2 sc, sl st in next sc, finish off, leaving a long tail for sewing.
add a safety eye or a button to center, then pin to face and sew on.

Ernie's hair
Using one strand black worsted weight yarn and one strand black fun fur, crochet to round 4 or 5 of head, sl st in next st and finsh off, leaving a long tail for sewing.
place on top of head with the wrong side up (beacuse it will be furrier) and sew to head with the worsted strand of yarn only. Weave in ends.

That is brilliant - we both spend a lot of time looking for MrD's glasses, so when I've got time (ha ha) will dig out my book of crochet stitches to have a go. (Last piece of crochet done about 25 years ago!)

These are GORGEOUS!!! Oh dear Badger, you keep giving me more ideas for things I could make people for christmas and I'm not sure if I can fit it all in! But I was in a bit of a quandry about what to make for my sister - the last person on my list - and I *think* she wears glasses these days..

Yeah, we should get some crochet tutorials up to make this a bit easier. I'm not much of an expert on this though, so wouldn't be able to add content for much beyond the very basics. Can anyone else help out if I get a thread started up? We could post youtube vids again like for the knitting tutorials and maybe do some pattern following tips.

Finally completed my pattern to share on here

RIBBED CALF:
ch 26
1.. sc 25
2.. sc 10 into backs only, sc 15 ch 1, turn
3.. sc 15, SC 10 into backs only, ch 1 turn
Repeat #2 & #3 39x or to the size you want. I find that if I can join the 2 ends together and slide my arm into it without stretching out the ribbing it fits my calf comfortably

53 rows in total.

4.. Join the 2 ends together by slip stitching through backs.
5.. CH1, SC 1 repeat so there are 53 stitches evenly around, SS into the 1st ST, CH1, turn (54)
6.. SC into each stitch around, SS into 1st ST, CH 1, Turn (54)
7.. Repeat #6 for 2 more rows Change to a new color for the heel

HEEL:

1. 20 SC , CH 1, Turn (20)
2. Repeat #1 for a total of 8 rows
9. 5 SC, DEC over 2 SC, 6sc DEC over 2 SC, 5 SC, CH1, turn (18)
10. 18 SC, CH 1, Turn (18)
11. 5 SC, DC next 2, 4sc DEC over next 2 SC, 5 SC, (17)
12 5 SC, DC next 2, 2sc DEC over next 2 SC, 5 SC, (15)

(You can either CH 1 and turn or continue as a spiral depending on the look you want.

2. 12 SC, DEC over 2 SC, DEC over 2 SC,
28 SC, DEC over 2 SC, DEC over 2 SC,
12 SC, SS to 1st SC, (46)

3. 11 SC, DEC over 2 SC, DEC over 2 SC,
26 SC, DEC over 2 SC, DEC over 2 SC,
11 SC, SS to 1st SC, (42)

4. 10 SC, DEC over 2 SC, DEC over 2 SC,
24 SC, DEC over 2 SC, DEC over 2 SC,
10 SC, SS to 1st SC (40)

5. 9 SC, DEC over 2 SC,,

6. At this point continue your spiral using SC. Measure against your foot, switch to a new colour for the toe when the length of your sock reaches the base of your toes.

TOE:
1. Start your new colour in the middle of the bottom of the foot. This way it hides the new colour change when doing the lazy spiral method.
2. Continue SC for 3 full rows around
3. 4th row DEC over 2 SC on every 6th SC
4. 5th row DEC over 2 SC on every 5th SC

sc round to the knuckle of your big toe

5. 6th row DEC over 2 SC on every 3rd SC
repeat until hole closes
6. SS the 2 parts together to close up the toe!

Turn your sock inside out and voila, you have a fun, thick slipper sock!
