Re: whats on the menu
Cottage Pie with peas & very nice it was, improves after a week in the freezer.
Also had homemade fish cakes for brekkie, again first time my homemade efforts stayed in one piece, so improving.

Re: whats on the menu
Struggled through with a tiger prawn, pea-puree and fresh rocket risotto last night as I just wasn't feeling up to proper cooking.
Feel this is a bad solution however. Feed a cold, starve a fever. I can feel myself beginning to waste away already. Am going to roast a duck or perhaps two to see if that aids recovery.

Re: whats on the menu
Well it seemed like a good idea at the time - puff pastry, spread with apricot jam, with a thin layer of rolled-out marzipan on the top. Problem was that it was an idea rather than a recipe, and I left it in the oven for too long, resulting in something which is blackened and looks like bad news for anyone's fillings! May have to see if the local birds feel tempted....

Re: whats on the menu
The ducks in orange sauce was a good call. had to open a bottle of Cointreau for the sauce which was conveniently to hand during the PMs resignation and is rather diminished now.
Did orange and cumin honey glazed carrots as well and new pots.

Love Eton Mess.
Liver, bacon & onions today with potato & carrot mash seasoned with horseradish & fresh frozen runner beans. Delish they may be but I still have at least 2 large boxes left.
Beetroot & cheese sandwhiches for tea, must remember & not shock myself in the morning.

Re: whats on the menu
Good idea, the Cointreau with duck Billy (did you really say "ducks" and not "duck"?
Cointreau lasts rather longer here, as it is so expensive (even duty-free!). You are giving me an idea, make pancakes, flambées, Crepes Suzette, yum yum!!!
Compostwoman, have you ever tried beetroot (sorry if you have) with something bitter like chicory, in salad? Or on its own, but with an incredibly garlicky salad dressing like skordalia?

Re: whats on the menu
I have greatly rediscovered beetroot after associating it for years with the limp pickled stuff you get. In fact it can be delicious.

Re: whats on the menu
Sounds good, Billy.
Here is a simple recipe for skordalia (there are some out there that are unnecessarily fancy and complicated. In fact skordalia is a Greek peasant sauce/dip, and uses basic ingredients)

Re: whats on the menu
Yes have tried to all suggestions of Beetroot.
To some people Beetroot smells like poo (poo smells like it does because of a compound called Indole, found in poo, beetroot and also found in jasmine as well, so if you are sensitive you may think jasmine flowers smell a bit off....)

Oh, I am sensitive to the smell..which is why I don't like beetroot...and am not fond of jasmine...!

Re: whats on the menu
Jasmine and poo notwithstanding, have you tried beetroot cubed then baked in the oven with lots of garlic, oil, rosemary and a bit of balsamic?

Re: whats on the menu
As we have had mention of beetroot and skordalia close together, I feel I need to mention that you can make a rather good Greek dip - Pantzarosalata - with beetroot. It involves blending together (cooked but not pickled) beetroot, walnuts, stale bread, garlic, a little red wine vinegar and olive oil. I found it in Madhur Jaffery's world vegetarian book, if you want to look up the recipe.

Oooohhhh, us too, only with spring cabbage instead of the beans (we've got to get through the cabbage so that I can plant out tomatoes in its place!!)

How I wish I liked fish & veg.
Today we had fish with a shwartz sauce, stir fried veg & crunchy potatos. In theory delish in fact just about OK.
Going to try salmon next week.

Errrm. Roast duck.
Not v. imaginative but I have been rushing about like a blue arsed fly and have to go out again in an hour to rehome the mega bee swarm I spent half the day coaxing into a brood box.
Duck is good for the soul. Bugger the arteries.
