That's a real bargain, Pol. We spotted The Victorian Kitchen Garden in the second hand book shop near to us, but it was £10 so we didn't buy it.

I'm a sucker for CDs (and vinyl). I'll pop into the local charity shop and come out with 5 or 6 CDs at a time... Listen to them once and add to the already overloaded shelves! There was an Oxfam "Music & Book" shop in town, and their average price for a CD is £5, DVD £6 and paperback books are £2.50. Surprisingly the shop closed earlier this year, and the organisers seemed genuinely perplexed by the lack of custom! Likewise theres a BHF furniture shop that charges £35 to collect items! The local council collect furniture for free, so who is going to pay £35 to have it collected?

Excellent bargains Sparhawk, I love the sound of the cooks scrapbook.

I had a quite spectacular forage in one of our local shops yesterday. Five vegan cookbooks, two wholefood veggie/vegan cookbooks, Michael Guerras' container veg book and a breadmaking recipe book. Nine beautifully well kept books that cost me £14.00 in total. I've just checked their published price and if I'd bought them new it would have cost me over a hundred quid.

Mr D was very pleased to find a 'racoon in a dustbin' glove puppet in the Red Cross shop for £1 in immaculate condition. It's made by a US firm and would have been $25 new. (I don't think Mr D went shopping with a 'racoon in a dustbin' puppet specifically in mind....)

Freecycle rather than charity shop but just scored a heavy duty aqua roll (one of those waterbarrels with a handle that you use for camping , but a 30L one - should make taking water to the pigs a bit easier, and a set of wing mirror extensions for the yet-to-arrive landy.

Good work there Billy! Have to admit that I've been too busy to plough through all the freecycle e-mails here recently. Did manage to get two moses baskets and a stand before LMC was born which have been very useful. I just bought new mattresses and made covers and it saved me a fair bit. A new stand can be £25 in Mothercare!

OK, so not exactly a charity shop find, but almost as good.... I've found myself with a slight transport issue for the next few weeks (no trains, can't take bikes on a bus blah blah blah), so with deep sadness I decided to bite the bullet and get a car (I had said I wouldn't buy a car, waiting to find a camper that I can afford). Having trawled ebay and the local papers, I was close to giving up, when I noticed an ad for a new auction house opening up here in Swindon. I popped along this evening and there were some seriously cheap cars! I purchased the cheapest car of the night, a 1993 Nissan Primera, MOT until June, Tax until May, runs well, £130! If the fuel gauge is to be trusted its even got 1/4 tank of petrol!

I drove a Nissan Primera until it fell apart (I wasn't inside it at the time!) - hope yours lasts as long as ours did (It should be almost everlasting if you're cycling as well!)

We had a Nissan Primera for a while too. I think we bought it for the value of the tax disk and sold it for a £100 profit 2 or 3 years later.

At a fete today. Big bag of books fro £1.50. Several for the kids - Paddington and a Shirley Hughes mega edition, and some Quentin Blake and something called Captain Underpants for Leo, plus a pristine copy of 'Where there is no Doctor' and two recipe books by Claire MacDonald of MacDonald, whose books I love, and assorted general reading stuff.
